Drones quad copters and Aerial Photography

More so some of the RC forums are fairly condescending and hostile to video-photographers and newbies in general, too many people with long RC histories with a lot of knowledge that is totally irrelevant to current technology despite this they generally like to argue and be opinionated because they don’t like seeing new people encroach on their territory as they see it.

Agreed. And I thought the level of pedantry was sometimes annoyingly hard to navigate on this site... Some of those sites are like a firewall of unhelpful know-it-alls.

Please start this section, I have a few questions and topics to address immediately.

Thank you!

Does Aerial Videography sound good?

If so, Jason, I will moderate it.
Ah David, you're the multicopter mod I referred too, you were there to comfort me via PM when my Phantom flew away as I was a poor sap that had one of the first models in the UK on the first firmware when no one knew about or spoke about fly-aways...

Aerial Videography sounds grand.

That be me.

Still following the Phantom flyways thread at various sites. Although I'm not entirely familiar with the engineering issues, I have some opinions about why they have occurred and can continue to occur.

I've messaged Jason on this subject, and hopefully we can get this going soon.

The multi rotor industry has skyrocketed (no pun) in the last year and continues to grow.

The NTSB Pirker decision has set the FAA back to the drawing board on developing regulations on commercial use of multirotors.

I've been watching the Masters golf tournament, and saw footage of that beautiful golf course that only could have been obtained from a multi rotor.

The fly-away issue is due to GPS/Compass issues, Arducopter has done a wiki on it and applied a software fix of sorts in a recent firmware release, there's been key RC people voice disquiet on the matter of GPS with the Naza in particular. GPS trackers are now more common and people are generally aware GPS isn't that sound and are prepared to fly ATTI.

There are websites trying to track the issue now such as: www.flyawayclub.com

I am interested too, as I am prepare to jumping in getting a phantom2 with the h3-3d gimbal, if anyone have this combo I would love to hear your experience for a beginner like me, thanks in advance.

with Go-Pro, i tend to shoot in medium view, this helps avoid the props in shot and, in my opinion, looks more professional than fisheye.

Agreed, I've been trying a few different lenses and also the Ribcage as various solutions but as yet I've not found an ideal solution for replacing the original GoPro lens.

So, I was thinking of handling this similar to how we have Audio structured here (for now).

With a re-direct in the "production tools" category to an "Aerial Photography" sub-forum in the "filmmaking" category.

Will that be satisfactory (for now at least) for everyone?

I could either put it there, and/or in the filmmaking section. A single section, but if it is listed in both categories (filmmaking and production tools) one of them will serve as a redirect to the other.

The whole technique/usage/craft vs. "equipment" organization is another area that needs addressing soon. Some things have crossover, obviously.

i.e. Cinematography / Lighting, Audio gear vs. on set use, etc, etc.

The intention is for the newly created drone sub-forum to cover both bases, of course (usage, and product discussion). It would go in either the "Filmmaking" category, or the "Production Tools" category, and the place that it doesn't go will have a re-direct, like audio currently does in the "Production Tools" category.

At least for now, in keeping with the current structure, until I figure out a better way down the line to organize/condense the Filmmaking, and Production and Post Production sections of the main page.

I like the idea of placing it in the Production Tools category.

That way it would encompass both tools and technique.

Why not Aerial Shooting or even Aerial Filmmaking?

It is funny, when there was only SD video, shooters loved to entitle to be Filmmakers. Now in Digital times, when all have similar tools and output anywhere, small or/and big screens, DR to mimic film, etc people intend to love anything video related, instead.

Just my 2 cents of euro LOL (E :-)
