Driving Across Country...what do I NEED to see?

LOL - Terry, did you see that episode of "Bones" where they were at a Carnival? In the beginning there were two sheriffs, one from Oklahoma and one from Texas? Oh my God that was so like how the two states feud!

I'm pming you my address, those sopaipillas I expect to be in the mail this week! ha ha, that will teach you, yah, they'll be stale, but knowing you, you'll probably mail me a picture of them, huh?

Hey Terry, you ever go to Cattlemen's in Oklahoma City? I don't think its exactly the hole in the wall or Diners, Drive-in or Dive I was looking for but the reviews and menu might make this place too good to pass up.

Yes, Cattlemen's is a good steak house with a lot of history (as your link proves). I had the filet (as I usually do wherever I go...) and it was great.

Bricktown (basically, east downtown OKC) is growing with lots of great restaurants, bars, and shops, movie theater, etc. As mentioned earlier in this thread, Toby Keith's is a popular place and you can catch live music there as well.

As far as Steakhouses go, I'm picky. If they aren't giving me something I can't do at home, I aint impressed. But, the reviews online are bonkers over this place and less than stellar for The Big Texan (where I will be the day prior). I might just have to get the same cut at both places and have a steak-off. Good God, this trip is going to be fun.

"Okey"?... no. "Okie"?... yes. Mailing address? ;)

Traveling through Oklahoma was discussed as a possibility earlier in this thread which is why I bothered to mention it when I noticed talk of Mexican restaurants. Further, there are more than two types of Mexican food - "authentic" and TexMex. Depending on the region of Mexico it originates, the food can be quite different. You would agree with my claims if ever you were to try Chelino's restaurant. :)

Actually, there are three. There's another kind in Memphis. Terrible. If you DO drive through Memphis, DON'T eat the Mexican food.

I do plan to drive through Memphis. I think I'd be a fool to not go BBQ. I just gotta decide where.

EDIT: Yup, 8pm and still here. Movers are only about 1/2 way done. I guess this trip really was meant to be slow and low...

EDIT part DEUX: 11:43pm and still here. Probably got another :45 min left in 'em I'm sure. If I am to get on the road by 4am, I must drink MASS quantities of the good stuff....

Well, I made it! My GF and I had a blast driving across the country. If you are not on a serious time table and want to see a few things, I highly recommend the adventure!

I took a LOT of the suggestions here in this thread (sorry Terry, I missed the cowsh*t tossing festival) and wound up seeing Jerome, AZ, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Painted Dessert, Monument Valley, Santa Fe, Cadillac Ranch (that one was yours Terry), had a big fat juicy steak at the Big Texan Steakhouse, saw the Buggy Ranch (by accident. got off the Interestate to gas up and there they were), had some KILLER Memphis BBQ pulled pork at Interstate BBQ in Memphis, saw Graceland, Downtown Chattanooga (went to Rembrandts), Gatlinburg, Drove through the Smokys, Raleigh NC, stopped at the Museum for Civil War Soldiers, spent a couple days in DC to see the Lincoln memorial, Washington Monument, WWII memorial, Veterans memorial, White house etc, went to Philly to see the birth of the nation at Independence Hall (where they signed the Declaration of Independance and the Constitution, Christ Church (birth of the Episcopalian regligion and Betsy Ross and Ben Franklin's church...even sat in their pew), saw his burial ground, the Liberty Bell, ate at the City Tavern (John Adams old stomping grounds but has since been rebuilt) and had a meat pie made from a classic age old 18th century recipe and enjoyed some authentic beer samplings from Franklin's, Jefferson's, Washington's and Adams's personal stock recipes...

I've got plenty of photos. I even have some footage of some of this. It may be months before I have time to piece something together but I just wanted to share. Thanks all for your suggestions. It was a very memorable adventure.
