"Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

About a week ago y'all sent me off to a shoot with some encouragement. I kind of dropped off the DVXUser radar there for a while so I could shoot and edit (and celebrate Thanksgiving with the fam'). I can't show it to you yet because it's still a few hours away from done. But here are some of the frames I liked, even though as a whole, the project didn't go my way. Oh well. Here are some grabs from "Dreaming of Summer."

I like em too! Nice contrast and comps. I love the coloring. Also a nice aspect ratio. Cant wait to see this footage

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

Oh, trust me: you can wait. I was being experimental with this project, seeing if I could shoot a 5-minute movie with close to 100 shots in it. So I shot each line once, everything completely out of order; my actors were completely unable to keep a consistent tone, although I have to say that for the way we shot it they did an incredible job. I planned and planned every shot, but shooting out of order made everything seemed disconnected. Plus, it was a huge audio learning experience for me, and I did several things wrong (even things I know better than to do!). The result is a nice combination of hums going on for the duration.

I'd be upset, but I learned a lot from this project. I'll post it so you guys can all give me advice, but don't get your hopes up that you'll enjoy watching it.

They do look nice and I too like the color comps. Was that done in post or in camera? Looking good playa.

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

HEY!!! That's the avatar from BLUESPIDER, chasing that kitten.

glassblower: The 3rd shot is perfection. Nice composition, lighting, ...nice everything. Shoot the whole thing from that angle, 1 shot, add some Tom Waits music playing in the background, end with climatic love scene on the counter, fade to black, roll credits. Ship it! ;)

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

I've always loved that kitten thing.

The color was done in post. Very much in post. I'm still young and poor, so I use big, big, red work lamps to light with. So I first did ordinary color correction to make the colors look sane. Then Magic Bullet. Nothing real special. It's the LS Punchy filter, if you want to know. Then a 1.85 matte, because Magic Bullet blurred my letterbox lines, and because I just plain wanted to.

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

Woah dude....Work lights, as in Home Hardware!... cool. Could you post a couple of grabs before correction?

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

These are pretty much the same frames without CC. I might have been off by a frame or so...

I also threw in one more at the end to show my main light, which you can see right behind the guy on the left. That light stayed pretty much in about the same place the whole time. I had one smaller (300W) dual-head halogen work light and one 60W desk lamp that I moved around. Not in the least bit sophisticated.

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

Thanks man! I have two 500w worklamps that I don't use much because I have'nt gotten around to building stands (or buying ) for them yet. I got them cos I thought " wait a minute those succers are on sale for $12.99 and I am the proud owner of a white ballance button, I bet they'll work". From what I see of you post, I was not wrong! I tried them out once but got too much bad press ( try finding those little glass 15 amp fuses at 3am :)

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

Yeah, the WB button on the DVX can mostly take care of it. This was a shoot where I was trying to do like 8 things at once (you know how it is), so I didn't always remember. Even when I did, sometimes those lights are just too red. I ended up doing about 12 different versions of the CC, depending on which shot it was.

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

Yeah, sweet grabs.

Also very encouraging to those of us who use work lights when we have to. :)

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

This is the only thing I did with lights and as you can see by expression it didn't go down well

yep it's a bit red.

And my version of cc

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

Excellent grabs glassblowerscat. as smier33 said, it's very encouraging to all of us that use the low-end stuff. Looking forward to seeing the finished project.

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

Mino, those grabs look really low-contrast. Was this with the DVX?

I've had the same problem color correcting still photographs that you seemed to have here: Work lights and blond people make difficult work. Unless you remove exactly the right amount of red, the hair starts to look green.

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

the second CG shot has too much noise. Give it alittle more contrast. And what's that expression on his face? :)

Re: "Dreaming of Summer" Grabs

Mino's grabs are underexposed, that's why it's low contrast, that's why it's grainy. From the histogram on Photoshop, nothing seems to be higher than 50% IRE. That's a shame. The thing is: The LCD is too bright, let things wash out a little in the LCD (NOT BLOW OUT) to compensate.
