Panasonic makes high quality cams with the AG-DVX100
and AG-DVX100A.

They know how to record true 24p on a MniDV tape, this is impressive.

I think they could make a 3 CCD native 16/9, HD 24p, that record on a DVCPro 50 tape (50 mbps).
If they could keep it the size of the AG-DVX100A, same features, and make a very basic (and low priced) DVCPro50 deck, they would sell so much units to professionals and prosumers...

...and it would be compatible with many of their current equipments.

...just a dream...

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

why do you think it wll take quite some time ?

Panasonic could do it in a near future if they want...

The most difficult part was to convert 24p advance to tape, am i wrong ?

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

Panasonic does make that camera minus the HD.. its called the SDX900.. and it will see HD before the DVX does.

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

yeah...

I've seen some images from the SDX900 last week in Montreal, very very nice.

...but on the other hand, Panasonic cannot stay away from the HDV race with JVC and Sony in the prosumer market...

...and they already master the 24p thing....so...

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

...so...i mean let's hope...

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

I already have the DVX100 and could really care less about HD at this point in my adventures. :)

I guess I read your post wrong. You mentioned very basic price. I was thinking you were meaning around the same price point as the DVX100A. That's why I made the statement. As Jarred said, they already have the SDX900 (which has most of what you asked, except HD) and is no where near the price point as the DVX. After re-reading your post, you mentioned a low cost DVCPRO deck, not camera. So, I guess I stand corrected in that regard.

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

that's because my english is so bad...hee hee...( i speak french...)

I was just dreaming.

I sold my DVX100 last week, but i'll buy the DVX100A next week (tested it last week).

To be clear, i love the images from AG-DVX100(A or no A).
...I like those images much better than a bunch of big pricey shoulder newscams in fact.
DVX's do not produce those hyper peaky contrasty video look that i hate.
No other camera in this price range (and much higher) gives me that beatifull image texture i am looking for.

All i hope is that Panasonic will keep this philosophy when they'll enter the HDV prosumer market.

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Panasonic have no plans whatsoever to enter into all this HDV malarky. HD yep yep, but not HDV, which is all this MPEG2 stuff. Am I right?

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

Well I wouldn't care if they would just use another recording format... uhm ok as long as I can still use all the MiniDV tapes for it :-)

Nevertheless I don't think that HD/HDV makes much sense with anything below 50mbps. Perhaps I'm just too sensitive when it comes to compression artifacts.. dunno ;)

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

maybe you're right, not HDV but HD someting else, but compatible with their current decks.

I was thinking about DVC Pro tape because it can carry 50 mbps...

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

Panasonic does make a HD 24p camera called the AJ-HDC27 Varicam. It's a big one (not small like the DVX) and costs a mere $65,000 USD (I think that's without the lens). Not only does it do 24p, 30p, and 60i, it does "p" at any rate, such as 60p, which is great if you want to do slow motion.

Take a look at this link:
http://www.panasonic.com/pbds/subcat/products/mnu_cams_ccorders.html

The HDC27 and SDX900 ($25,000) both have 2/3 inch 16:9 chips, and two of the major differences between the SDX900 and the HDC27 Varicam is that the Varicam is High Definition (or SD) and it can do progressive at any frame rate (hence "Varicam").

The HDC27 is now being used in commercials and TV shows to replace film.

Go ahead, dream on . . .

May I ask this rather out of the way question as to what made u shift to the 100A? Anything special?

Re: ....Dream Panasonic HD Camera

I tested the new AG-DVX100A for 4 days last week and compared it to my AG-DVX100, extensive A/B test etc...

Here are the improvements that i like:

1-new detail enhancement on the viewfinder and lcd that makes focus easier.
2-better color rendition
3-adjustable knee point, usefull in difficult contrast situations.
4-knee point (non adjustable) on cinelike gamma modes, very very usefull to avoid burning the luma and color in very bright areas.
5-ND2 does not shift color temperature anymore.
6-I see a improvement in dynamic range
7-new "mid" v detail freq. adjustement that gives avery beautifull image texture.( in Progressive mode only)
