draw a line, and a circle?

The only way I can seem to figure out how to draw a small line is to add Shape>Rectangle and crop it down to a thin line. I have to crop it, because for some reason the shapes don't have transparent backgrounds. So the only part of my rectangle not cropped is that thin line. Now, when I need to add a circle, how do I add it into the picture without losing my background?

use boris vector shape--> oval. Set Border 1 to ON and set the color to what you want your line to be. scroll down and turn the fill opacity down to zero.

You could also use the vector shape for the line as well using the same approach as the other one you said but there are more options in the boris generator.
