Drag Me To Hell - Sam Raimi's New Horror Film!

Just saw it today. Loved it. It was funny were it needed to be, and had a few good moments where I jumped 6 feet in the air. Alison Lohman was a fantastic choice for the lead, and Justin Long pulled off the serious, yet cynical psych professor. A noticed a few parts that were literally ripped from the Evil Dead Trilogy, but since I'm in love with those movies, I'm not complaining, and hey, why fix what isnt broken?

This is so bizarre -- where's the fans at?

In case you haven't seen it, it's a fantastically fun horror film, from the a-list director who made the Evil Dead series, which has a 94% positive rating on rottentomatoes.com, and the viewing public is voting it an 8.2 rating on IMDB (which, if that rating holds up, would put it in the middle of the "top 250" list, in the company of "Gladiator", "Cool Hand Luke", "Fargo", "Die Hard", "The Sixth Sense", etc...)

Man, I woulda thought DVXUsers would be all over this. Anyway, it's fun fun fun, and if you like Evil Dead or Dead Alive, it's right up those alleys.

Just saw this tonight. This film rules. Clearly Raimi's voice, with a lot of his actual touches, but not just a "greatest hits." Be a lot of fun to see him keep making stuff like this. And it's such a welcome breath of fresh air after the antiseptic spiderman series.

Good balance between horror and humor, with a couple of genuinely scary moments( like the back seat of the car moment) and a lot of over the top laughs. Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness both veered too far into three stooges humor, as where Evil Dead had humor but also seriously creepy moments. The blend is true greatness.

And of course, the 73 Olds...actually made me wonder if I had seen the Olds in Simple Plan...might be the only one I cannot remember it in.

I love his unabashed devotion to badness, cliche, not even an attempt at character beyond the basics necessary to get tortured by the baddies.

After the turd-burger of star-dreck, this is a welcome piece of stinky cheese goodness.

I'm waiting for the DVD, I hate theaters anymore.

Yeah, I took a buddy new to Brooklyn to a theater last night notorious for its talk-back crowds. But this film kind of invites audience participation, and honestly the characters aren't saying anything you need to hear. It's just baseline filler to get you from scare to scare.

Except that part where she goes: "I'm gonna get some!" :)

I'm generally fine with noisy crowds who noisy because they are into the film.

But it's nice to see Raimi just flexing throughout this whole film, working up the suspense with an absolute master's touch. It's very clear what an amazing director, and how confidently he works the moments.

it was really fun, but i had audio commentray from behind me. i just tried to get through it. one shot you, you know, scared the **** about of everyone. and the closes to the screen said, "GOD DAMN" lol and everyone laughed.

CLASSIC RAIMI on display in all of it's slepndor. It was funny as hell and make me jump quite a few times. Very Evil Dead-ish in parts and that is not a bad thing. That actress took one hell of Bruce Campbell style beating all the way through this thing.

I want to see this, and plan to this week. Reason I haven't gone yet is I've just been buried in too many things that have to get done at the moment. Hopefully I can make it tomorrow night or Wednsday. Looks like a fun move. There are a couple shots in the trailer where the crazy old gypsy lady at times looks like a Deadite from the Evil Dead series.

This was a fun movie. I absolutely hated the opening prologue. I thought it was bombastic, over the top and too obvious with its special effects, and didn't properly build any suspense. Thankfully, once the movie proper started they took their time to set a creepy mood and deliver some classic moments. That fight in the car with the gypsy lady was nuts. I think the mid-section is the strongest part of the film. Once they got to the medium and all that phantasmagoria it got less interesting for me. I personally think CG visual effects are the enemy of horror and this part of the film relied too much on it. They needed to show less, not more. The scariest parts of the Evil Dead movies come from something you don't ever see. It was a diverting enough time at the movies, but for me, it's no Evil Dead 2.

Seen it. B rated horror movie with Hollywood budget. Among one of those horror films that most people will soon forget.

New problem I'm noticing: All those damn teenagers are texting throughout the entire film. Distracting when all you see is blue screens lighting up everywhere in the theatre.

As mentioned, this is a movie where talking and general disruptions don't really take away from the whole experience. Probably better to see this one with a crowd of noisy people.

Alison Lohman is ridiculously hot. She makes Kirsten Dunst look like a pile of puke.

I generally agree with you about CG. In fact, one of the debates among the team of the feature I am producing now, is about doing some things with miniatures, puppets, models, vs. all CG for the same reason.

But the cheese on this thing was so thick, the scenarios so manipulated with the clanking pots and sound effects, it was already so phony of an enterprise, a little CG didn't bother me. I mean, seriously, have you EVER seen that much rain in your life to fill up that grave so fast? And who the F*ck has an honest to God anvil tied up from the ceiling?

But the moment when she turns around and the old lady is just sitting there, that was a work of frickin' art. The crafting of that sequence, from build-up to the moment she sees the silhouette in the back seat, the audience I saw it with did this collective cringe. Not a shout, or cry out, but 500 people doing a mass collective cringe. Flat amazing.

My only regret, man, was I wanted the spirit to stay in the goat. Replace everything the guy did while possessed with a goat doing it and you have some genius there.

And anytime that goat calls someone a whore, I'm in.

But if said goat was dancing around while floating...Mark is right, that would have been genius.

SPOILERS

I finally got around to seeing this awesome flick. Funny, scary, some repulsive parts... pretty much what I was expecting from Sam Raimi in horror mode. Very well shot while not being overdone cinematographically. The sound was great and over the top too, perfect for this film. Some effects were really good too, while some less than stellar CGI shots, but those didn't really bother me because this was so fun and silly. Great sense of humor, particularly Justin Long's character being surrounded by all the Mac stuff. That giant iPhone shot was priceless.

The only part I specifically didn't like at all was the cat sacrifice. I just hate it when animals get killed in a film, especially a little kitten.

I loved the Evil Dead style possession at the seance, where the medium's assistant is floating and dancing demonically in the air. His makeup also looked very Evil Dead.

Also, I was expecting a Bruce Campbell cameo, and unless I missed it that was one thing I was looking forward to. Speaking of Bruce, Raimi needs to say **** Spiderman 4 and do Evil Dead 4 right now. Get Bruce on the phone and get moving guys.

But the moment when she turns around and the old lady is just sitting there, that was a work of frickin' art. Yep. That was a masterful piece of suspenseful buildup and payoff.

I liked what the possessed dude did, but I also wanted to actually see the Lamia in full demonic goat form by the end of the film. Kinda like Jaws and Alien teased the audience with glimpses of parts of the creature, then by the end you finally get to see it in full form. I was expecting some sort of cross between an evil Pan and Darkness from Legend.

Other than that, killing the kitty, and no Bruce Campbell cameo, this film kicked some.
