If it's any help 6 months on I had the same problem Rode Reporter and a DR40

I solved it by using a Fethead http://tritonaudio.com/index.php?Itemid=33 which is an in-link fixed pre amp. This boosts the sound cleanly.... Works on a Focusrite 2i2 as well. I put it on the mic end of the cable so it boosts the signal before going down the cable.

NOTE: the Fethead is powered by phantom power. There are two versions one that passes the phantom power though and one that does not. Make sure you buy the right one!

I have the Rode reporter going through a MixPreD to my camcorder...it sounds very good!

Yeah I solved the problem the same way.
I have both phantom and non phantom versions.
