FS7: DP502 monitor

Obviously I'm not Sam, but I have the original 702 (Brite? or something). I ended up making a bunch of LUTs with LUTCalc, mostly for exposure compensation/different ISOs, which match the gain/ISO settings I have on the switch on the side of the camera. Obviously if you're outputting Log in Cine EI, changing the switch on the camera has no effect on the output signal (make sure you're not double-LUTing!). I made up the exposure compensated LUTs for vanilla Rec 709, vanilla LC709a, and a LUT with a bit of my own secret sauce. What I did find was that not all LUTs that other people/companies supply worked in the monitor (sometimes just output a black signal), I actually started a thread somewhere about this and the LUTCalc bloke came back with some suggestions, I think he's now written a preset for the small HDs.

I have the d-tap converter which Small HD supply (remember you need to down convert from 12v to 7.2v). I've run this directly out of a v lock battery (which can output anywhere from 11v to 16v), as well as a regulated 12v d tap, with no issues so far. I also have the Canon LP E6 AC adapter for mains.

Reviving this thread as I just ordered the lower res 702 Lite.

Sam, have you been making your own LUTs or using the LC709a or third party ones?

Also re power is anyone just using the d-Tap on their FS7 battery to power it?

I just use a 709a lut... in theory I should get/make a '709a-1stop exposure' allowing 1000 instead of 2000

In reality that LUT is fine, just keep a bright happy look in the monitor. I also have a 'screen' with a very large RGB WFM

I have a dummy battery which I cludged a 2.5mm jack into meaning that my 502 runs from 12v and yes I have a Dtap to run it from the same Vlock that runs my FS7, said Dtap lead was tied to an SDI lead to make for a neater rig.

---

One update on the 502 in general. I think I have broken the SDi input by a bash to the wire probably during my army shenanigans confirming my suspicion that the 502 is not really hardy enough for eng production.

My 502 is now running from an HDMI

I have not had time to fully confirm the status but have tried 2 sdi leads.

Thanks for chiming in mate. Was thinking about making some exposure compensated LUTs

Cheers Sam. Yeah it definitely looks like something to be wrapped in cotton wool a bit.

So your dummy battery is an unregulated one? I was concerned about pumping more than 8v into it.

If you output slog3 as a LUT from the fs7 you can use the EI setting on the camera for compensating LUTs on the monitor. You do lose the ability to show any other LUT in camera though.

My SDI broke aswell on the 502 Sam. With that rotating monitor from the EVF-attachmemt its just so easy to break. Repaired it and sold it. The 7inch screens looks better though, they dont sell as a possible eng-enviroment thing. Regarding power d-tap from bigger batteries are probably best because they are quite hungry it felt like.

Ben - my dummy batt is certainly regulated - don't put 12-14v into the monitor! It's probably a Hawkwoods that I would have bought for the 5d2

It is also worth noting the cable position as I had to modify mine

FWIW here is my full screen RGB histo demonstrating clipping.

In terms of set up I have this 'screen' also with audio levels (the setup screen) and then the shoot screen which is pretty clean

I find the RGB histos extremely useful to get a guage on colour and which of the three presets to select when using Slog here you can see a slightly high red channel but not anything that would not instantly sort itself out in post, especially if one shoots a grey card.

I sent it in to smallHD and only paid for the shipping there. The repair and shipping back was on them. I think they were extra nice to me since their monitor did not work with sony psf signals like they claim in specs. The punch in function looks seriously bad IMO even on the FS7. Sent it in for that aswell and they replaced the main board but nothing changed.

Yep my dream of punch in at the finger never came true.. it looks bad and I never got a remote controller.

Currently the 502 is love hate.. the electronic specs still complete the FS7 but the build is a let down.

Got it here finally. looks lovely and very intuitive but the image seems a touch warmer than the vf.

to be honest spending another 40mins with it the monitor is clearly far more accurate than the vf anyway!

Liking having a page for client view and one for monitoring too.

Apologies in advance for a load of questions I might throw your way.
