FS7: DP502 monitor

Thanks Ned.

Based on past experience I'm wary of Small HD promises on future updates, but it does sound like it has a lot of nice features - especially for LUT's & waveform in 4K & HFR. How that sidewinder mounts is confusing to me so far though.

I'm throwing together a kit and have been spending way too much time figuring it out. I kept looking at the silver 1/4"-20 on the top & bottom of the SF and kept coming to the same conclusion - there isn't enough clearance to use anything else besides an israeli arm. Which isn't a thing.

then i realized the attatchment - not the universal kit, but the piece that screws into the side and allows for nato/rosette/quarter-twenties - will work fine with the Zacuto Axis & Quad rail. the lack of clearance on the silver 1/4-20 is irrelevant since there are 2 points to bite on that mount.

it's pricey but it needs to be tough for our pace. there are some other similar options out there

SmallHD just released firmware update 2.0 for the 500 series. Cross conversion and LUT downstreaming. Good stuff.

Just got handful of 502s that shipped with v1.1. I noticed that the Histogram & Zebras were affected by the LUT. IE, apply a LUT and those tools showed how the LUT affects exposure.

That changed in 2.0 - all the tools (WFM, histogram, zebras) read the SOURCE exposure only with no option to read the applied LUT. The device is capable of doing both, and I can imagine situations where having the option is very useful.

I called SmallHD and voiced this opinion. They are very nice guys - I suggest you drop them a line and let them know how rad the 502 is. 919.439.2166

(I also requested that Zebras get an Opacity setting)

Also, heads up with passing signal through the 502 with v2.0. Maybe this is old news?

I noticed some banding in both clean SLOG3 and the LUT'd signals using the new feature. It looks similar to banding from 8-bit cameras, so I assume the 502 is downsampling 10bit from the FS7 to 8bit in the monitor. The SDI out from camera had no banding.

Don't you want the exposure tools to read the LUT out put..??? like other camera,s.. you need that if you are going to rerate the ISO in Cine EI..

Too bad... well I can continue to save my money for now.

which part?

i'm confident SmallHD can implement the ability to view both source exposure and LUT exposure. In the v1.2 release notes, they listed this in the "Known Bugs" section

"• Exposure Assist and Zebra are currently displaying data based on the LUT active on your image and not the image raw data."

Let's let them know that wasn't a bug for some of us, it was a feature

obviously it would be best to be able to switch between them and have the tools follow whatever is on the screen. That's how the Odyssey works.

Taylor - I've been away for a week on vacation... catching up on this thread now... just wondering if you can clarify this for me... the banding you were seeing was in both the 502 as well as the pass thru signal to other monitor? And were you crossing sdi and hdmi when you saw this? Thanks in advance.

was looping SDI through 502 to a 21.5" Panasonic monitor. i was not cross converting and do not believe it was enabled.

yes- banding was both in 502 and on the broadcast monitor. as i mentioned, SDI out from camera straight to 21.5" monitor had no banding so it's not the camera. it was more of a stray observation an editor and i noticed when i was showing him the camera, so i need to do a little bit more research.

ultimately not a deal breaker for my needs, and it was a situation ripe for banding (hard falloff on a white wall from a recessed overhead can)

Thanks for the reply. I'm certainly happy to see more mfg's coming out with LUT support - even if it's not quite perfect yet. Being able to show a client (and certainly playback a clip with a lut applied) a near-finished look on set while not having to bake it in while shooting seems to me the best scenario.

I think most of the monitors and recorders with 3D-LUT support does some sort of conversion with the LUTs into around 17-point LUTs. This may cause banding, and also the 10/8bit thing might, but Im not sure about how that works with loop-through.

My only reservation on using an external LCD/Viewfinder is running out of battery power. What kind of battery life are you seeing on one of the Canon LP-E6 batteries?

Anyone using an LP-E6 to Dtap converter to run from a battery such as one of the Swit batts that have the Dtap connection?

I use a lanparte regulated d-tap out of the 502 into an battery plate for sony bp-u60. It runs at least 4h.

Reviving this thread as I just ordered the lower res 702 Lite.

Sam, have you been making your own LUTs or using the LC709a or third party ones?

Also re power is anyone just using the d-Tap on their FS7 battery to power it?
