I like the DP4 on my MK3, and no issues at all on getting them to work together properly. There are a lot of good reviews of the DP4 out there, so I won't comment on its pluses and minuses other than: I could never get used to the swing-away loupe (great view through it, but heavy and unwieldy - I've noticed that it is no longer advertised on the SmallHD site - perhaps because of its useability problems). The sunshade on the other hand, is featherweight and has worked well for me. It may not be elegant form, but I find that when pressing my forehead to it I can get excellent stability during a shot. And although the monitor has 2 modes of falsecolors that work effectively, I still wish it had zebras.
The DP4 is a nice monitor but it has some drawbacks such as following:
It does not have battery level indicator - you never know when to replace the battery.
There is no peaking color, it just makes the edges sharper for better focusing.
The menu wheel "double stroke" once in awhile which unintentionally gets you to the menu item you did not call
Thanks everyone. I already have a DP4. I am planning on replacing my aged and non-video 5d with a mk3. Better cam for stills and for the first time for me, I'll have a hdslr for video. So I'm just imagining my set up and have a lot to learn about hdslr workflow. I suppose at some point I'll set up a shoulder rig and wanted to know how the DP4 has worked out with the 5d3 It has worked well for me on a HMC40. Only thing as others have noted, the weight of the LOOOOOP is pretty substantial. In fact, if I mount it on the cold shoe, I feel like I'm stressing things a bit.
Raw recording makes this camera a production monster, but the single biggest issue for me is the lack of an opposable LCD. I own a SmallHD AC7, but it's huge on this camera (though it is more manageable mounted on rods behind the camera). I looked around for a monitor solution that was a little more compact.
I considered buying another DP4 (having owned one in the past), but I know I'd miss the 1280x720 resolution for critical focus. Then I looked at the F&V SpectraHD 4, but for that price I may as well pick up an Atomos Ninja Blade and get a free external recorder as part of the deal. I've used one before and short of lacking an anamorphic stretch, it is my favorite monitor.
And that was where I left it. Now, I'm just waiting for the Shogun to drop so that people start offloading their used Atomos Ninja Blades.
I had a TVLogic on a FS700 60fps shoot once and fell in love with it.... it's the VFM-058w which is full hd and all the bells and whistles. It's a bit pricey but worth it!
