Downresing to DVD

hey everyone,

got another downresing question, lets say i wanted to shoot something on the hvx and my final video was going to be on dvd.. mpeg2, would there be any noticable quality if i where to shoot 720p for example and downres to 576 for dvd? Or would shooting straight 576 dv50 have the same quality?

thanx

I think DV50 is going to do just fine for you. Downrezzing 720 can look good depending on the downrezzing algorithm in use, but DV50 will have half the compression. But hey, run some tests and decide for yourself! :)

thanks guys for the replies, at the moment i havent got my hvx yet, i should have it soon, i was just wondering about that, because ive got a project lined up and when i get the cam im going to start shooting, not that I wont do tests first ! :)

I agree with Barry if your final product is DVD then DV50 is the way to go.
However, i love being able to crop in the image a bit for post camera stabilization or "zoom-ins" with no loss in quality.
Basically it depends on your production..
I would say if your in a controlled studio environment with no moving shots then DV50 all the way..
Other wise you might want to shoot HD so you have more options after the fact.
ALSO dont forget your ability to do the variable framerates in 720p only

yeah you have a point there on the variable framerates.. possibly downresing within the camera might be a good option then.

The HVX's image, after the optical path, is converted to 1080/50p. All formats are derived from that. (Image processed from hi-def to the recording format)

So, I don't understand why going to any recording format of hi-def first would help at all, as it's already doing it. In terms of picture quality.
