downconverted hd to dv

Can anyone explain how you would go about using HD shot footage in a dv timeline. If you take the P2 material put it on a hard drive can you downconvert the footage to dv and edit on slower computers for a rough edit then go back to the original footage. Is it also a non render process? I'd love to hear any workflow steps.

thanks

In FCP, which is all I know, it would be much more efficient to just edit in HD and down convert a final. Any computer that can playback the HD to begin with can also do the down convert. But you do have to render. I will tell you though, render times for 720P 24 footage are not much more than DV on my G5 dual 1.8. And 1080 is tolerable although with fewer RT effects. Hopefully FCP 6 adds more.

FCP 6 will handle 1080/24p & 30p DVC Pro HD. But FC Extreme should be able to handle even more. At $10,000 though, it will probably be more expensive than the Intel Quad (not G5 Quad, but the G6 Apple/IBM Quad which Intel will port and build) that it will run on.

10, grand. I hope it comes with some hardware for that price. If not.. I'll wait for the G5 to render.

Considering Apple and IBM are not bed-fellows on Intel PowerMacs (or MacPros as they may become known) I don't think an Apple/IBM Quad is terribly likely.

Sorry, I should have clarified. The Apple/IBM G6, has been designed, but not built, for some time now. Intel will build this new Quad-core chip, for Apple and PC's. Reportedly, Apple will get a royalty on every PC that uses this new chip.

Probably not. Probably only comes with one DVD-installation disc and a single license. But for a Post-house, that shouldn't be very expensive.

You dont need Apple to down convert you can do it in the camera called DUB mode shoot HD and dub it to DV Tape which is cheap and dirty way for down convert.

If I'm run and gunning it using a P2 store I don't think I'd have time to downconvert on tape. I was hoping that I could downconvert after I downloaded to hard drives. There are a lot of old laptops around, I use FCP, and it would be nice to use any machine wherever you are for a rough edit instead of having to rely on newer computers or desktop systems to edit.
