Downconversion experience?

I have been downconverting some HD100 24p footage to standard def, and I'm getting tremendous interlacing problems on a few shots. I use a VelocityQ for my standard def broadcast stuff, and it's specific handing of the footage may be contributing somewhat, as it has a particular problem with SDX900 16:9 24p too, but I wondered if anyone else has done much with downconverting HD 24p footage from this camera and what experiences have you had. BTW - I also downloaded some examples posted on this board and noticed it on those too - specifically, Stephen's "Runoff," where he pans across a river with a forest behind it. The trees in the shot are doing a lively interlace dance when downconverted to SD.

I've had tremendous success downconverting HD footage from both the HD100 and the Canon XLH1 using Vegas 6. I also tried it with Premiere but it comes nowhere close to Vegas.

You don't say. May I ask what about Vegas in that particular operation is better than Premier? I don't use either, but I have been looking at Premier since recently becoming interested in Cineform.

By the way - I recognize you as the Pine Lake guy. Happened upon your site one day in a search for mini-crane reviews, I think. I do desitination type shows for ESPN and OLN (not trying to drop names here, there's a point to this....), and if the cost of bringing you from the West to East didn't raise eyebrows, I would ask if you wanted to join me on a shoot in a heart beat - great work!

Anyway, about that Vegas-HDV downconversion thing.....

Shoot, if I had the wherewithal and circumstances, I'd take you up on it!! Thanks for the compliments.

I prefer to do all my editing in Premiere with Cineform's Aspect HD but when it downconverts HD to SD, it softens the overall look and makes it more murky, IMO.

Vegas does an incredible job of retaining most of the HD information (as much as can be retained in SD, that is) and makes the SD version better than any miniDV footage I've seen. It also retains a natural sharpness at which Premiere just seems to fail miserably.

hey dis,

are you editing hdv natively? or you using some form of intermediary codec.

and in terms of the great results you're getting in SD, is that when you burn to dvd or print back to tape?

thanks

Thanks for that info Disjecta. May I ask what card you are using with Premier/Vegas to output to your monitor/tape?
