FS7: Doug Jensen's Sony PXW-FS7 Master Class

Good Job Doug! Thanks!

This is the 5th one of your camera Instructional Video/Class's I have bought in the last 10 or so years. They are all great resources for anyone using them and this is the best yet. Even after 30 years in this business you always manage to teach me a thing or two and certainly are a master at getting one up to speed using a new camera.

cheers

Morton

Thank you very much everyone for the nice comments I really do appreciate it the feeback. I guess everyone likes to get good reviews for their work!

I've often joked with my wife that when I have trouble sleeping, all I have to do is start one of my lighting or cinematography instructional videos and in 10 minutes I'm out like a light. I'm happy to report your video is not one of them- no problem holding my attention.

I can highly recommend A. van Hurkman for a power nap. H has great knowlegde though but gets me to sleep within minutes.

Audio.

Input 1 reference. Can you expand a little on this and why in a high SPL environment you would change this.. not just turn down the pots?

Doug, I found the videos very helpful but have a quick question for you since they are online for 6 months once you pay.

My camera work tends to be irregular. I might have 5-6 months of fairly constant work, then nothing for 6 weeks, etc. I find that I need to refresh my memory on occasion. (Blame it on my age. LOL) I've already gone back and watched a couple of lessons more than once.

Is there any way as a paid customer to refresh my memory after 6 months?

Thanks,
Duke

Doug always puts out incredibly informative guides, whether they're in print or video, but the six month limit on a guide to a product many of us are likely to own for 3 to 5 years really reduces the value of the product to a potential subcriber for exactly the reason you point out Duke. And since downloading is explicitly prohibited, it would seem like the only plan available to watch after the six months expires is to pay for a new full price six month subscription.

Hopefully he'll consider offering a reduced subscription for extensions of prior subscribers.

(INFO REMOVED) I'm not sure that a "6-Month Only" restriction is really that effective.

It takes all of 40 seconds to install a plugin for Chrome that downloads a "download not enabled" vid from Vimeo (and 2-3 mins to download a vid), so I'm not sure that a "6-Month Only" restriction is really that effective.

If you want other people to respect your copyrights, you must respect the work and rights of others.

With all due respect, that would essentially be pirating content, and I don't beleive it is in the spirit of this forum to discuss pirating content.

Doug Jensen worked very hard and long producing an in-depth video guide to the Sony PXW-FS7. I may find the licensing terms he offers restrictive and undesirable, but that does not mean we may legitimately circumvent those terms. The key point is that currently, Doug specifies that access is only permitted on a streaming basis, not a download basis, and therefore any attempt to download the video and store it for digital access beyond the six month license period would be in direct violation of the licensing agreement offered.

EDIT: Issue resolved amicably. For the record, I wholy beleive thorn was only making a technical observation, not advising illict action. "Call to action" portion of this message removed, as issue resolved.

I agree, Duke. Having produced and sold a tutorial video myself in the past, I know it's quite a bit of work and copyright deserves to be respected.

And for the record, having viewed the first chapter of Doug's FS7 video, it will be on my shopping list if/when I get an FS7.

@Viddo

Have edited my post and asked for it to be deleted. It wasn't my intention to violate any rules, nor encourage property theft. My apologies to all on that.

Just purchased for little tips I might not have thought of - 6vids in and already picked up a few little bits and pieces. Nice work.

Sam,

It's easy to grasp the concept if you simply think of these menu settings as being like ND filters for audio. When you're shooting in a very bright light you might have to stop down to f/16 or farther to get the right exposure -- and then you have practically no range of adjustment left on the iris. But if you put in some ND to knock the level down, now you'll have a much greater range of f-stop choices. Same thing with the audio controls. If you are in a really loud environment you may have to turn the audio dial down to 1 or 2 to get a correct level, and now you've got no range left for fine-tuning. So if you change the input reference level then you can have the full 1 to 10 range of the dial available to you again instead of being constrained to the bottom. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you everyone for the support about the training video. I do appreciate it, especially for the comments about piracy. It turns out that even in this business, where every one of us has work that can be stolen, some people still have no qualms about ripping off a colleague. A few bad apples make it harder for everyone else. Sad but true. The priates are like shoplifters who make prices higher and the terms more restrictive for everyone who is honest.

There are several reasons for the 6-month streaming limit but it's not worth going into publicly. All I can say is that the terms are what they are. If the terms work for you great, but if not, I understand. I'm not going to try and talk anyone into it. But not liking the terms shouldn't be justification for finding a way to steal the video. If I don't like the price of a movie ticket I don't slip in the back door. I just don't go to the movie. Also, the price is much cheaper than someone would typically pay to attend a live 1 or 2 day workshop. Plus you don't have to travel. You don't have to take a day off from work. And you can watch it as many times as you want for six months. Compare that to a live workshop and the streaming video is a pretty good deal. I don't know what other people's time is worth, but if a video like this saves just one or two hours of time figuring out the camera, or teaches you a few things you might not have noticed on your own, it ought to be worth it.

To those who have ordered the video, I THANK YOU again and appreciate your taking the time to post your comments. Word of mouth is really the only advertising that works on a product like this.

Just to be clear - I don't believe the member who initially posted a method of circumventing streaming protections did so to encourage piracy, but rather, intended solely to provide commentary on the limits of such technology. He's apologized and removed the comment, so I don't beleive that ultimately anyone in this thread has expressed an interest in "ripping off" Doug's hard work.

Ultimately, in situations like this, people vote with their wallets, and I'm sure a couple of years from now Doug will take a look at the sales numbers and see if the experiment in limited duration streaming was a solid repeatable business decision. Of course, I also wouldn't be surprised if in a few years when he's selling far fewer course subscriptions if he offers a significant price reduction to encourage late adopters - but only Doug knows for sure, and that would probably be after most of us here know the camera backwards and forwards or have moved on to new gear.

Just wanted to chime in with my vote of thanks to Doug - I was cramming it in the passenger lounge in the last few moments before flying off, after which I had no internet access for a week.

It made a huge difference to my confidence on that first shoot.

Ben.
