Doorway dolly design tips?

I am thinking about building a doorway dolly to mount my tripod on, and I would like to be able to use it on somewhat rough surface like asphalt.

Does anyone have an idea what type of wheels I should use to minimize bumps in the ground? Should I go with big or small wheels? Air or rubber? Is building some sort of suspension an option?

Yeah, that's one way to go. Maybe you can't escape the need of tracks if you want smooth dolly shots.

I just feel like you could make a dolly with big wheels, maybe some kind of suspension and be able to get acceptable smoothness directly on floors and asphalt. Yes, no?

I would love the freedom you could get with such a device, just push it around without having to lay down tracks and worry about track joints. Should I stop dreaming? ;)

There is a reason u dont see any rigs like this (well small ones that is), they dont work. The main problem is weight. Unless u build a large rig that doesnt fit through a doorway, ul end up with something that weighs under 100lbs loaded. Any air filled tire (especially 4 of them) wont take out the bumps that u would encounter on concrete. A suspension setup would run into the same problem not to mention it would be very hard to build something reliable. The movements are too slow to use dampers and springs would just amplify any bumps u hit.

I would recommend u stick to a tried and tested method (ie skate wheels and pvc pipe) instead of using all that time and energy building a rig with slim chances pf working.
