dont understand transcoding....

i know its a very noob question but...

i know transcoding (on the HMC150) is changing the AVCHD files into another type such as DVCPRO (right?????). what programs do you need to do this? i have FCP 6.0.6, and i'm on a school computer so i can't download anything else
 
You should be able to change your log and transfer settings to transcode to Prores 422 or something similar. DVCpro HD is fine as well but I use the prores 422 and lower and it works well......even on my macbook pro. I use FCP 7 which introduced a couple more ProRes formats but 6 should have ProRes 422. 6.0.3 and later. Here is a good thread I just found and explains ProRes a little:
