Don't think my XLR inputs are working

I'm trying to connect a mic. I read the manual, but it isn't working. The sound setup is from my school, so I'm thinking it might be broken. It has a mixer and all that, maybe I just don't know how to use it. HELP PLEASE!!!

can someone give me the right settings for how the camera should be set up for:
A) Normal use
B) Connecting an external mic

If your mic is going through a field mixer and the mixer is connected to camera, make sure front left switches are set to line. If mic is going directly to camera set front left switches to mic. If mic is going directly to camera and it is condensor style needing power make sure phantom power make sure "mic power +48v" is turn on for the input the mic is plugged into. Also if you only have the one mic plugged in at the front, plug it into input 2. Then set the CH1 Select to Input 2 and the CH2 Select to Input 2.

Turn up the audio dials to around noon and you should be getting good signal. The white block on the audio level indicator is -12db.

Otherwise for using internal camera mics, (yecch!), set the ch1 and ch2 switch to int(L) and int(R) respectively. Everything else will be bypassed.
