Donnie Darko

What the...?

I didnt get it. You should have seen me- I almost tore a pillow in half when the credits started. Someone explained it to me, a little, but I still am outraged. Who finances something like that?

To continue on the other thread here (without resorecting it)...

I REALLY like Donne Dark, both versions. I still can't decide which is "better".

The best advice after watching it once and beeing confused, is to watch it again. Just as the Back To The Future movies, there's a lot of subtle stuff that you don't notice the first (or 10th) time through.

For me after teh first time it didnt' make sence.
After the 2nd time I understood it all.
After the 3rd time I was confused again on a whole new level. :)

Good stuff, definatlly a thumbs up recomendation from me.

I dont think its necesarily the fact that I didnt get much of it (like why the heck was Cherita even a character) but it was that it was badly made. Gylhenhal (not how you spell it) was annoying, and kept trying to act like he was possessed, and gave the tilted-down head/upward-eye look (try it- exactly how it is said) WAY too much, and... it I honestly think it was badly lit.

To say, also, it didnt look like it took 4.5 million dollars. Take away 1.5 for film, that is STILL 3 million. The "special effects" wouldnt have costed more than about .5mil, so where did the 2.5mil go to?

My point is, why would something make this. I am NOT saying that I didnt like the movie, I still have to talk to some people about it... but I dont know why someone thinks it is extraoridinary, or remarkable. I knew a guy who said it was worthy of a Criterion-DVD/laserdisc name. It wasnt. I need to be convinced of it's greatness. Michael Andrew's 'Mad World' seemed to be a nice addition, but it was phenomonal.

And lastly, why so many fades and dissolves? There were proabably 120 of them, one every minute or so. I think a fade/dissolve is the cheapest and ugliest thing in a movie, and though a few are OK, did anyone else think the amount was unbearable?

wow.

pto2212, do you like good movies? just wondering not to be mean but i dunno understand why you wonder why people made this.

I wish i could have made it, everything is good about it.

acting, story, cinematography, and all that on a low budget I have to say its over looked as being a great film. then again its on the top 150 imdb.

and for a first time director and writer I say he did a damn fine job.

come paired to other movies with the same budget with actors such as jon bon jovi and other crappy films I have to say this is gold and I wish we would turn up more like this with that budget than this.....http://imdb.com/title/tt0407038/

The IMDB top 250 doesn't mean a whole lot.

Anything commerically successful can hold a high rating.

Batman Begins, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, etc. Can all be found on that list.

All three LOTR movies can be found ranked above Psycho and Citizen Kane.

yeah but all those movies you listed are atually good are they not? even though they might be out of order tell me you did like them.

Donnie Darko is a great film. End of story.

pto2112, Poorly Made???!!!!

You're obviously not watching the same film. Richard Kelly is the real deal.

DD tends to get better the more times you watch it. But, if you didn't like much about it to begin with than it won't do much good anyways.

I had to watch it a few times to really take something out of it, and even then I was only scratching the surface.

Hell, I had to watch the last 4 minutes of The Sixth Sense three times before I caught on to what the hell happened. So, don't feel too bad. :)

At least tell me you liked the Tears for Fears "Head Over Heals" part in the school. At least tell me you liked that.

If everyone hasent checked it out yet, watch the directors cut commentary with Richard Kelly and Kevin Smith, he explains the whole movie piece by piece. After watching it with the commentary I was blown away at the level this guy writes at, and I think everyone else will be too.

Good Movie! It was creative, entertaining, odd, a fun ride, and many other terms that point to a film worth watching.

I was good and visually inspiring, you know, like Lord of the Rings or Batman Begins.

It's not what it makes, it's what it makes you feel.

Easily one of favorites. "Getting it" doesn't always make it good IMO. Anyway, I love it and have watched it several times.

This film and "Memento" are two films that get better with each viewing.

The first time you watch them, you're blown away and have to watch it a second time to "get it all"

Just my 2 cents.

Seriously, though--

Donnie Darko is a cult hit for a reason. It's a great movie.

Richard Kelly, who is probably a one hit wonder I-dare-say, has a great directing style that I'll probably bite a bit. He always shoots back into a corner. You can really tell he's been through a lot of art classes, not just film classes, because of the still-life qualities his shot choices have.

I spent most of my academic career in art class or graphic design class... so I'll probably direct similar.

Dunno about Richard Kelly being the real deal or anything like that... but the guy fought like hell to get that movie made, and it's a success IMO.

Not here to push my opinion on the thread starter, though. Just my added thought.

Donnie Darko is an awesome film. Its one of those movies that you can watch over and over and always take away new meanings and find new things you'd missed before. A truely terrific film.

We, Im going to watch it again. And to you Spidey, I will say that I lve great movies, and hate all the dumb, badly made ones.

There were just some points in the movie where I had no idea why someone would do that. That whole Smurf thing had nothing to do with anything, but while some random speech is OK, stuff like that is disturbing. Way get yourself into an R-rated zone. And what was CHERITA FOR?

Someone said that Richard Kelly was a first time writer/director. Im pretty sure thats not true. He made Visceral Matter and The Goodbye Place before Donnie Darko.

I was in a desperate outrage when the movie ended, now I am neutral with it. I dont know if I like it or hate it.

Im into... I dont know. That French-New-Wave style I think it is, like F. Truffaut. Thats what I've heard it called. Not the actual french movies, but the new ones, like the ones by Wes Anderson. My favorite movie is The Royal Tenenbaums, and all of his other movies follow (no particular order, Rushmore, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Bottle Rocket). I think anyone who has seen the Royal Tenenbaums can agree it should be more praised than it is. It, to me, has much more art and talent put into it than Donnie Darko, despite what probably all of you think.
You NEED to go rent it, if you've never seen it. The more you see it, the better it gets. And it is shot in beautiful 2.40:1, so much detail is put into it, which is what Anderson is known for- his obsession for detail.

To me, Darko was too... open. If you didnt have the Director's Cut edition, you would never figure everything out. And despite what anyone says, there are a million answers to every unanswered question. There is no right answer. Which, to me, is a failure in the writers part, because to lack all that detail is bad, though you have the right to think differently. I am DEFENITELY not saying that they should straight-forward bring you the answers, but they werent integrated into the story enough. I just think that... I dont know.
