In the beginning of the movie, after the engine crashes into Donnie's room and the FAA people check it out, no one knows where the engine came from. That's because it came off a plane in the future, the plane his mother and sister are on in the end. The engine breaks off and it falls into a portal and the portal takes it back in time, sending it crashing into Donnie Darko's room.
So, by allowing the engine to crush him Donnie has saved his girlfriend and Frank, and allows Cunningham to go free. Since Cunningham goes free, the gym teacher doesn't have to miss the trip to Star Search (or whatever it was), so there is no need for Donnie's mom to fly out there (since the gym teacher can go) or for his sister to fly back with mom on the red eye flight. Thus, he saves his mom and sister, too.
