I just watched this film (Donie Darko) and im not sure what to think about it, obioulsy i will have to watch it again to get a better grasp of it, as for every movie.

What does anyone else think about it?

Did you watch the theatrical or Director's Cut? I happen to love both - in their own ways... Director's Cut definitely spells things out a lot more for ya, so I am glad I saw the original version first.

I liked this flick. I've seen both cuts and I liked the original release a bit more than the director's cut. There is one thing that bothers me about Donnie's decision in the end.

WARNING: SPOILER

While in the alternate universe, demension, or whatever, Donnie was able to expose Jim Cunningham (Patrick Swayze) for what he was. By staying in bed and allowing the engine to crush him, he undoes what happened at Roberta Sparrow's house but he allows Cunningham to go free.

So, the positives are: Donnie's girl and Frank don't die, and his mother and little sister aren't on the plane that gets ripped a part and ends up crushing him.

The negatives: Jim Cunningham is free to molest little kids. Thus, ruining the lives of many children.

I still really dig this film, though.

I also like the original theatrical release better. The ending had much more of an impact when everything wasn't spelled out for you. For me, it was one of those unexpected surprises from the rental store. I hadn't heard anything about it and picked it up from reading the cover. Definitely worth seeing.

Not true he saved them all even cunningham because he wakes up crying and realizes all the things he done wrong. Donnie Saves everyone by sacraficing himself. He's like jesus I suppose :-p.

GAh I love this film!It is a perfect script and director and actor. This was the film that made me relize jake G is a great actor. I cant wait Jarhead. And southland tales and Domino will also be great films both written by Richard Kelly (domino is directed by Tony Scott). The film is fanfrickentastic. As cult of a Classic it can be.

I guess you could interpret Cunningham's crying that way . . .

. . . or maybe he cries after all of his abusive sessions with young child and it's just part of his sick cycle. He loses control of himself, abuses a child, and then struggles with his internal demons afterward. This makes more sense to me.

Yeah she was home then, but the engine came from a plane in the future. At the end the plane she is on starts to rip a part and the engine heads into one of the portals. So, to my thinking, that is the engine that kills him and it goes back in time.

I have to say my favorite part is where they are discussing the meaning of 'Forget about it', just really solid acting, or wait, that's Donnie Brasco :)

Donnie Darko is an amazing film in it's own right. Beyond the script, it was a very solidly acted film, and the cinematography is perfect. Personally I am a big fan of the directors cut, but I'm still amazed everytime I notice that Drew Barrymore actually produced it.

Now back to Donnie Brasco...

the commentary says that everyone knows what happen from the they one uinverse and when mad world comes on you know everyone knows what happen.

Anybody see the #1 Donnie Darko fan on the special features of the directors cut DVD? He kisses the director and runs away its pretty funny.

The kissing is one of the funniest things I've seen.

Sorry John for the omitting EXECUTIVE. At least it carries more weight than Associate
