DOF: Our eyes vs. our cameras

If I'm standing in bright sunlight, my pupils are almost closed. Do I have deeper focus than if I'm in a dark room where my pupils are wide open?

I can tell by focusing on my finger that as I bring the subject closer to my eyes the DOF gets shallower, like with a camera.

weird subject I know but I was just curious... Anybody know anything about this?

Yes the same rules apply.

I'm currently half-blind as all of us 40+ guys get, and I can tell you that driving during the daytime is a piece of cake, driving at night is not recommended. In the daytime my pupils close down and I can see just fine. At night, with the pupils wide open, I can't see much of anything in focus (hello, Lasik!) so yes, the same rules apply.

Hmmm... interesting. I would like to know tech specs on this. Say, someone with 20/20 vision; how that would translate to f-stops, dynamic range, and DOF.

*off to research*

yeah - but, wearing a pair of those would just make my neck hurt

wasn't the inspector gadget wearing some zoom lenses we could find something like that, if not possible look for the lest mobile option, a tripod with rods to support the setup.....:D

Or perhaps a modified orthodontic halo on which a myriad of lenses and peripherals, if you will, could be mounted...

So if I'm reading this correctly:

20 somethings see with 2/3" chips and 40 somethings see with 1/3" chips that have a back focus issue?

Isn't this also the idea about squinting your eyes when you can't see something far away? I always though squinting helped to increase the depth of field so you could see things in focus.

It does. The other thing that helps, if you're ever stranded without your glasses, is to make a pinhole aperture with your hand and stick that in front of your eye. Everything gets darker but sharply focused...

Heh heh... this thread reminds me of a song...

I got a gal with just one eye
No depth of field but sweet as pie
And I just don’t careo
If her vision is in stereo
To me she’ll always be the tops
My sweet little cyclops

She’s the one-eye, one-eye, one-eye, one-eye
She’s the one-eye, one I love

Now you might wonder what she’s thinkin’
‘Cause it looks like she is winkin’
In arguments I yell and cry
But she just can’t see the other side
It’s worse than it looks, says her mother
‘Cause she’s blind in one, blond in the other

She’s the one-eye, one-eye, one-eye, one-eye
She’s the one-eye, one I love

Now how it happened, she just won’t spill
Was it scissor sprint or William Tell?
Well the eye got put out and was never found
Gone to take a look around
My Columbo cutie, Popeye punkin’
Sammy Junior, Sandy Duncan

She's the one-eye, one-eye, one-eye, one-eye
She's the one-eye, one I love

squinting your eyes helps reshape your eyeballs. This will imporve astigmatism issues you might have.

I hear that FOV of our eyes are most consistent with a 50mm lens (35mm equivelent)

Try focusing on an object really close to your eye you will notice that things will be thrown out of focus a lot easier.

The human eye is really like an awsome camera/lens. The DOF is really good, dynamic range is awsome, really quick auto exposure, focus.

Yeah, but it's a fixed lens... Yuck!

I'd be happy to mount a telephoto eyeball and contemplate this hot neighbor that I have...

She loves to work out half naked at home and what I have now is just a thumbnail!

Please Jim...

..I mean...

...Please God.... give us interchangeable lenses!

Now if only we could have controll over our eyes exposure and have them be zoom and not primes with the ability to have telephoto lenses held up against them...
