DOF on stock hvx

Do you mean shallow depth of field? and if you want to see an example, check out Frozen River in the Spyfest section. I was on the long end of the lens for the conversation on the River. Some shots used the Brevis later int he film but everything outside was stock HVX and on the long end of the lense with the iris as open as possible.

I shot some nature footage today with a stock lens - here are some screen grabs. Comments welcome

Nice butterflies. Can you give us your settings on these? Were you at Z99 and was the iris wide open? ND?

1st ND on, circular polarizer, auto iris, Z80 or so. I was not really trying for shallow DOF on these shots, sometimes the stars all align and it just happens.

If you do have room to step back and zoom in, there's no question you can do quite well in achieving shallow DOF. In fact, I'd say that if you have this option, why use an adapter?

A 35mm adapter will show it's value in close quarters, particularly when shooting at the lens' minimum focus range. Dial in a few stops on an 8 blade aperture and suddenly you can nicely tailor the look of bokeh too. As I do more work with the Brevis on steadicam, I'm finding it quite possible to not only maintain decent focus at a 2 metre range (presetting focus and maintaining range), but also getting reasonable bokeh from a 24mm. You simple can't do this with the bare cam as zooming in exagerates even slight camera movement.

Great shots. That was really the point. I wanted to find out if it was required to go the 35mm adapter route to get those types of shots.

yeah, id say that for the most part a 35mm adapter IS required. the images shown here are pretty nice. but you need a lot of room between you and the subjects to pull that off. youre not going to see much if any DOF across a room or in smaller quarters with the stock lens

Another factor is the size of the object you are shooting. Obviously when shooting something as small as a buttefly, I could be a lot closer than if I were shooting a
person and still get shallow DOF.But with a large room or area to shoot in, it is very
possible and a lot cheaper and easier (less lighting needed) than with an adapter.
