DOF adapter or DSLR

Hi, new member.

I'm a commercial still photographer moving into the motion world and hoped to get
some different opinions between dof adapters (such as letus) vs a video dslr. I own
a HPX170 as well as alot of Nikon glass. Looking for pros and cons of both to help make
a decision on what to purchase. With a vdslr I would have a second camera to shoot with
but I know they have many limitations. ( with or without something like a full Zacuto rig.)

Thanks

I'd say DSLR. I've had both but got rid of my adapter as soon as I was set with my 5D. You've got the nikon lenses, it will be a second camera for still. I never go hand held for anything (just the way I shoot) tripod, slider or jib. With my 5D I have a monitor but never use it. The 10x zoom to focus and set my in and outs is great. With my adapter I always used a monitor and needed it! The DSLR is small, great image and I haven't had the cleaning/repair issues that I feared on shoots that I had with an adapter setup.

Another factor to consider is how much you value low light sensitivity. The DSLR' s are MUCH better in this respect.

I prefer the "look" of a letus adapter with an hpx170. the final product looks perfect to me.

I'm shooting with the 5D as well, and I have to say I prefer my hpx170, but I also shoot a lot of handheld stuff.

however, if I'm tryin to be sneaky...I go DSLR all the way.

theyre two different animals. if you were a seasoned video guy, id say go with hpx+adapter.
but since youre a still guy you might not even notice some of the ergonomic and workflows oddities...

also depends on what you shoot. i wouldnt begin to suggest a DSLR for a ENG/run and gun person. but for straight feature/commercial, the DSLR starts looking decent

Thank you to everyone for your input so far. Like many things I don't know if
there is an overall right answer. I will be shooting a variety of things from corporate
to doc. to stock. Should I ever get to the point of landing bigger budget commercial
assignments I think the point will be moot as I would just access what ever I need
for that project. As for now, I do have some experience shooting and lighting on other
peoples docs and small low budget commercial projects, just need to get more experience
(pay my dues) on the other aspects of production. Ie: audio, editing, script/story telling.
I know it should really be a team sport but I also think one should have a certain experience/
quality level in the whole process and be able to go solo if you need to.

Sorry, I got a little off topic.
