Does vegas require more resources than premiere?

I was thinking of switching, based on all the positive reviews for Vegas coming from DVX Users.

All I'm scared of is messing up my system, which is running very smooth with Premiere right now.

The reason for switching is to avoid running into all the downfalls of Premiere when working on a large project. (I have a few coming up soon)

I'm not too familiar with computers. The guy who built it for me made it with video editing in mind. I know that it is a P4 with WinXP pro. I don't know the rest.

Basically, all I need to know is whether or not the Vegas software should work given the same resources as Premiere. I was going to try Avid, but was warned that it would likely not work.

Also, is it really worth the switch? So far, it sounds like it is.

Thanks for your help.

From my experience, Vegas will run pretty well on just about anything. I wouldn't worry about it bogging your system down.

Agreed. Vegas will run smoother than Premier (IMHO) on most systems.

Just curious, what are the "downfalls of Premiere when working on a large project" that you refer to?

I'm not really familiar with any of these programs...but what I've consistently read on the this and other forums is that Premiere is buggy, and is not recommended for long projects.

I also took some editing classes, and the teacher really recommended any of Vegas/FCP/Avid over Premiere, because they are all "superior," whatever that means. He is a working editor though, so I expect he has good reasons to think that.

Regardless, Premiere is what I have, and I will find out how good it is. Hopefully I can afford to switch over to Vegas. Thanks for the input.

Another quick question:

Is there any forseeable danger in having both Premiere and Vegas installed on the same system? As long as they are both not running at the same time, does it make any difference?

I cant think of a way it would mess up your computer at all. I think you're pretty safe installing them both. If you don't know much about editing I think you'd be better suited towards Veags. Overall, I think its a better program and much more intuitive than Premiere.

Yup, shouldn't be a problem. Running them both simultaneously shouldn't be much of a threat either.

Yeah, I've run both simultaneously and it works fine. Vegas is way LESS resource intensive than Premiere, as others have said. I switched over from Premiere to Vegas last year when I bought my DVX and I haven't looked back. Vegas is great, I'd definitely recommend it. Premiere is buggy, especially if you're working in 24p. But, to be fair, I haven't used the new Premiere Pro 2.0 with 24p yet so I don't know how much they've fixed. But, it will likely still have flaws based on its past history.
