GH2 Does This Mean the GH-3 is Around the Corner ?

the body is still avail- and you will only see that discontinued a few months after a GH3 (t's what happened to the GH1).

When a GH3 comes out... that's the time to pounce on the GH2 as it will be around the $500 range. And you would have to be brain dead not to buy it at that price (again- same story with the GH1).

topics like this just make everyone want to start a rumor and give unsupported reasons as to why a "gh3" might be around the corner... ugh. Drives me nuts... sorry, but I hate it.

the old lady sitting next to me on the train said she saw the GH3 around the corner just before she left the house =) but in all seriousness, call me old fashioned but i will only believe it when i see it, and there's better things to do with one self than to speculate.

...Of course it will be an unsupported rumor, as very little in the world of digital cameras happens with advance notice. Olympus is the main company behind the M4/3 format and they have a new flagship camera being announced in early February, that ships the end of March. It's very likely this camera will encroach on GH-2 territory, so it would make sense that Panasonic would have their own response waiting in the wings.

When B&H Photo list the GH-2 14-140 combo as DISCONTINUED, it means that something has just disappeared from the market. It could mean that the 14-140mm lens has been retired, or it could mean that a new GH camera is on the horizon. The huge sell off of GH-2 with 14-42mm kits for $699 in December gives the appearance of flushing inventory from the market, which also makes me wonder if the next GH camera will be entering the sales channels soon.

Lastly the new Panasonic 12-35mm and 35-100mm lenses are weather-sealed lenses, but right now Panasonic has no weather-sealed M4/3 body to go with these new lenses, and Olympus is about to introduce a weather sealed body next month, so it makes sense that a new Panasonic weather sealed body has to be in the works.

Yes, this is all speculation, but there's a good chance that some of this is true. We will likely know by early Spring.

The GH2 was announced Sep 2010, the GH1 announced Mar 2009. So if the 18 month product cycle holds, the GH3 will be announced Mar 2012.

This kind of product cycle is quite predictable, it's been dead on for Canon, Nikon etc.

Do you really think that Panasonic is not going to produce a GH3 this year? Of course they are. It may be spring. It may be fall. However, it will be this year. It will definitely have new features that we all like. It will be missing some features that some of us like. Its price will be similar to what the GH2's was when it first came out. It will be offered with the new 12-35mm and/or the 35-100mm lenses.

You can also count on it being extremely hard to find when it is first released. You can also count on it having AVC-HD 2.0 with 1080p @ 60 FPS. Beyond that who knows. I know I will be first in line to buy one though. However, I won't be selling my GH2 right away. That camera will make a great backup camera for many decades to come.

Yeah, but that doesn't take into consideration the Year of the Dragon and our own Leap Year. And the slight shift in the Gulf Stream is also showing signs that temporal measurements may not be as exact as we think they are.....:Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Hate to be a doom-sayer, but what if there is no GH3? Maybe they are sick of the hack competing with the AF-100, outside of our little community the GH series have not been big sellers. My local dealer has had one on the shelf since initial release and has not sold any, but moves a lot of gf's and likely Gx's Consumers on the whole do not care about 24p on their own cams, they just want it to look good on their flatscreens.

There was no GH3 shown at CES, there is no replacement listed on B&H or other dealers, while they showed listings for GF3 and GX1, etc for months before they were available. And why the stock sell-off before new the new product launches? All seems a bit sketchy to me.

Even Vistek in Toronto, which is notorious for holding to full retail, has been having sales, and is currently below B&H's final selling price for the 14-140 package, and don't have any bodies listed.

The rumour sites say Photokina in September, but that seems to be a long way off to be discontinuing current stock.

The only other option, and it is possible, is that they will be launching the new lenses on GH2's with new, currently unhacked firmware, like the late GH1's, no doubt it will be cracked, but it buys some time. Here's hoping for s 12-35 package soon. I'd probably go for the 45-200 as the long lens option, as I'd likely only use outside, and don't need super fast. Manual primes would cover interior close-ups.

I own the 45-200mm lens and I expect the 35-100mm to be a much sharper lens, especially as this will be the M4/3 equivalent to the Canon / Nikon 70-200mm lenses.

The 45-200mm lens is fairly sharp until about the 150mm mark, then goes down pretty fast after this.

Knowing Panasonic's track record, you better pre-order your GH3 now if you want to have it under the tree for Chirstmas 2013 !!!

Isn't there a big Japanese photo tradeshow on February 9th? Vistek is always last to the party, until a few weeks ago the body alone was $995 and with 14-140 was around $1500. Seems a strange coincidence that they'd finally drop the body and cut so deeply just as B&H discontinues.
