Does this enable shooting 3D with the AF100?

Someone posted this in the GH2 forum and since this 3D lens also fits on an AF100 I thought that 1 + 1 = 2:

Very simple workaround = 3D not only for stills.

I'm not a 3D enthusiast, I don't even have a 3D tv but if/when my clients start to ask for 3D shots, I'll have to provide them with 3D shots, or starve.

If that happens, and this is what I plan to do, renting a 3D camera is probably the better option. Pannys new 3D camera is pretty cool. Got to mess around with it when a rep had one in mpls. At least for me, when clients start asking for 3D it will be special project and doing it properly will be important. Also, panny rep told me the next line of 3D cameras could possibly have M4/3 sensor. That sounds cool!

But what makes a 3D camera different from a 2D cam with 3D lens? Does a 3D camera provide with higher resolution? I know that currently 3D is shot with basically two 2D cams next to each other which should result in two times full HD resolution but what is the resolution of the current 3D flatscreen TVs?

Depends on how the TV shows the footage and how the recording format stores it. For the most part you're probably looking at side-by-side, which means two 960x1080 frames (left eye and right eye) stored on each 1920x1080 frame, and then 3-D'd in the television. That's the way the Lumix 3D lens works.

I just ordered one of the 3D lenses to go with my GH2, so I'll definitely try it on an AF100 and see if it works. We put it on an AF100 in Osaka but the camera didn't even recognize the lens; maybe covering up the contacts will allow it to work.

Ok I'll keep an eye on your findings.

Funny how this supplier is advertising this 3D lens as add-on for the AF101:

Then on the other hand, $300 isn't a huge gamble, if it doesn't work you can easily sell it again on eBay
The 3D effect only works within a certain range though, something like 1 to 4 meter from camera, that's what people write in still photography forums. But if it works in the AF101 or GH2 that's still very cool and a nice way to dive into the world of 3D.
By the way the last and only times I saw 3D was in movie theaters in Holland, in the early 80s. First I saw one of the Friday the 13th episoded in 3D, a few weeks later one of the Jaws movies. With the Friday 13th it was very funny when Jason shot something straight at the camera and most people in the cinema ducked down, because it really felt like the object came into the cinema. I've never seen any of the modern 3D flatscreen TVs.

4/3rd sensors on 3d cameras?

I dunno, even 3D movies that are shot on film I have an issue with. For me, this is one of the applications where a smaller sensor might be better due to creating a deeper depth of field. Part of the joy of 3D is being able to explore the set with your eyes, which is very difficult to do in 3D when it's out of focus.. Give us depth!! :D

Ok you have a point here. Maybe more interesting for usage on the GH2 in crop sensor mode.
