Does the HVX overscan

I framed shots using the 'safe area' border lines only to find that everything in the monitor and viewfinder show up in all my renders and even dvd renders. Are these 'safe zone borders' for CRT SD tv's only? I'm confused what purpose these borders serve.

Thank you, you guys do a great job and are so helpful.

The HVX shows the full frame (aka "underscan"). TVs don't. And not just CRTs, but plasmas and LCDs as well, they all cut off a portion of the frame. So the HVX "90%" safe zone is trying to say that if you keep your action within those frame lines, it should show up on all TVs.

Thanks Barry. I screwed up maybe 12 shots out of whole feature by letting a boom or a few other things move into the 90% safe zone. They show up on my dvd's so I guess there's a few more fx shots to add to list. Set ceiling here, boom there... few little things I should have done some tests because I don't remember having these problems when using the DVX.

So is it correct to say I should never let something I don't want seen (ie boompole) into any bit of the HVX screen even if it is on the very edge of the frame?-

yeah I'm gonna have too for a few shots. Luckily I shot 1080pa and scaled down to 720 for the final edit. Shouldn't hurt those shots too much I hope.

Think of it this way: Anything inside the safe zone should show on ALL playback systems. Stuff outside the safe zone will show up on SOME playback systems. Anything you don't want seen on ANY playback system shouldn't be seen on the LCD/viewfinder.

Makes sense now. I jumped into shooting before dealing seriously with post and it's gonna bite me in the butt with a few shots but that's OK. I guess I was used to using the DVX and previewing it on a regular tube tv were I always lost a little around the edge. I do remember screening one of my shorts at a festival and seeing what I thought was the tip of the boom in one my shots that I didn't remember seeing before.

I dug the my old tube tv out the garage and did a test and you definately see screen edge on the HDTV's than with the old tube tv's.

Lesson learned.

Don't worry. I beleive that a lot of Hollywood movies don't really crop out the boom pole, they have a safe region that theater projectors cut off... but if it were widened a little bit youd see the boom coming into the shot.

Someone correct me if Im wrong but Ive seen reels of "The Ring" and "Spiderman" in college auditoriums where they didn't properly adjust the frame. Kinda ruins FX heavy movies where you see take after take of boom pole.
