GH3 Does the GH3 allow monitoring through AV-out?

Hello, just got our GH3 and we're planning to use it with our Cinestar octocopter for aerial work. The camera does not come with an AV-cable and I was wondering if the AV composite video output is live during recording? If I could monitor through AV-output I wouldn't have to buy a hdmi-->composite video converter because my video downlink accepts only composite video signal. I hope that someone has the answer :) Thanks a lot!

Have you got a reply to this question now? I have a GH2 and am sad that you can't output live video out during recording on it. Might upgrade to a GH3 if it does live video out via AV out..

as far as i know, gh3 has only HDMI out... no composite .

According to the Owners manual (USA), on page 74 it shows the AV OUT/DIGITAL output port immediately below the HDMI port. But you do need to plugin Panasonics custom AV cable (DMW-AVC1) to get standard RCA connectors. Whether it is active while recording I have no idea. The manual only talks about it in connection with playback.

hi badlaa,
I am thinking of doing the same thing (but not on a Cinestar), and am asking same question - however, my GH3 has not arrived yet so can't check it. Please keep us updated as to how you solve this issue. It would be great if the AV-output will work during recording because that solves all our problems, but I won't count on it until I see it for myself.

Ok I tested this thoroughly last night. The HDMI output works flawlessly. You can output live view with or without icons. You can also output the manual focus crop zoom mode which is tremendous for my astro photography work.

I forgot to test ETC mode. However, I think that does work as well with HDMI. I will test that tonight.

The bad news is that the RCA output is limited only to playback mode. You can’t output real time live view at all with standard composite outputs. It doesn't show you anything until you put it in playback mode.

I also tried outputting HDMI to an HDMI to composite adapter. Everything worked except you can’t put the camera in 480i mode with HDMI output. It only allows 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. That is a real shame. I guess I will just have to buy a black magic box or maybe one of the shuttle drives.

I am going to request that they put 480i in as an option for HDMI output. Maybe it will work. Maybe it won’t. However, that is all you would need to get excellent composite output of the live view.
