Does the DV socket really atrophy?

Someone mentioned in a recent thread that the DV in/out socket in the DVX gets malfunctioning over a period of time.

I wonder whether the socket is damaged by 'regular use' or through 'excessive use'. Again does it relate to 'normal use' (including excessive use) or is it the result of careless handling. Does any one of you have any experiences in this regards, with the DVX or any other cam.

Thanx

I broke mine.. but it wasn't the cameras fault, I used one of those stupid ZipQ cables that pulled the pins right out :(

Re: Does the DV socket really atrophy?

Yeh you are right Jarred. One of my friends advised me to use the best quality dv cable, both for the best image transfer and to save the socket from any unwanted wear and tear. Here in Sweden, Belkin is the choice DV cable.

Re: Does the DV socket really atrophy?

i had mine fail but it was a matter of plugging it into something while both devices were on.

the tech who fixedit (under warranty!) said it is a very common panasonic problem.

he said he fixes a lot of different models above the dvx and the most common problem by far was the firewire port getting fried.

he said that the other cameras he works on have a circuit to prevent this problem that the panasonic doesn't have.

i bought a cable that claims to prevent against it.

it wasn't really any issue before but now i use dv rack so i use the firewire port on the dvx a lot more.

Re: Does the DV socket really atrophy?

I always had firewire problems with my previous camcorders, all sony. It's not a DVX problem. The Firewire port is not meant to be plugged/unplugged all the time. That's why having a VTR or dedicated camera connected at all times can be so good. Head wear is nothing compared to the wear on the FW port, at least in my experience. Of course I never had so intense head usage as dubbing houses, or more swamped high end production facilities...

what do u mean by the FW port getting fried.... can u elaborate a little.

Secondly do u think this 'frying' could be prevented....for a consierable time....say by using some special brand of cables. could you name any..
