Does the 5DmkIII really sucks as many people say ?

J.F.R. , Not in my town. I have had people like Dan Catullo III ( Known Music Producer/Director ) , Bill Fishman (known Music Producer / Director), Leon Gast (Academy Award winner), I can name so so many more that I worked for that has asked for a 5D Mark II.

Your doing something wrong.....

As an editor and shooter, people just want me on the job. They honestly do not care what camera I use ( as long as it's hd). Work speaks for itself, just like the man Phillip Bloom who you have in your sig, unless it's a really high paying job where the client wants a RED, 9 times out of 10 they will trust your judgement....
HD? In that case I will ask if I can use my flip camera or iphone 4s. :)

Slightly better dynamic range on the II. Faster start up time, lighter, slimmer and not to mention it costs less than half of the III.

http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-vs-Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_II

Both are good cameras, it is the content that matters anyways. Unless viewed at 100%, almost everything will look the same on both cameras if lit correctly and fixed properly in post.

The II's "advantages" of .2 f-stops of DR, 100ms of startup time and 100g of weight difference are what I would call negligible. Everything else the MK III offers is a demonstrable advantage. And with the Mk III bodies in the $2800 range now, the price difference is down to about $1000.

Yes, both are definitely good cameras. But all other things being equal, you'd be downright crazy to pick a II body over a III under any circumstance, especially regarding video.

Those bickering about the dynamic range are forgetting about the Highlight Tone Priority setting on the MKII and MKIII. Because of the noise introduced when you use it, MKII users were always told to stay away at all costs. On the MKII it's ugly. However on the MKIII you can turn it on and forget you even turned it on in the first place because the change in the noise is almost impossible to see. The different in the rolloff of the highlights gives you a lot of extra headroom on a lot of shots. That basically makes the MKIII the winner as far as I'm concerned. I've seen the comparison tests and done them myself. The MKIII handles everything with more grace, less noise, and especially with D+ turned on, more dynamic range even if the only range added is perceivable shot to shot as opposed to measurable on a chart.

Also, the HDMI output improvement is huge for those who care. It was one of the things I was most excited about beyond the ISO performance.

In my market, producers have been asking for the MKII by name almost exclusively for the past 3 or 4 years. And not once (in my market) has anyone asked me about a GH2. Every now and then I substitute my Red for the MKII, but the MKII is still the most requested camera where I work (and nobody as of yet has asked me about a MKIII).

+1. I use D+ on the mk3 a ton. Works a treat.

Thank you, that was exactly my point. Texas must be a GH2 state. Hehe

MK3 all the way. This is an interesting video. It will show that MK3 isn't as soft as people claim it to be. You will have to watch the whole video that is less then two minute long. At the end of the video they have some footage that the Mk2 would never be able to pull off.

Well I guess in Florida and many parts of the world, people actually hire you for your talents.... Also I guess you didn't catch my Phillip Bloom line, as he basically uses any camera he wants. Furthermore I shoot independently as well as edit, so as long as the work looks great, clients do not mind what I shoot on. Now if they want more I will suggest RED, but if not they are always happy with Canon, Panasonic, etc. cameras I use.

Heck on a Major shoot last month where the Client paid for Red, the dp had like 3 extra GH2 camera capturing B-Roll and the Director was fine with it and trusted the Dp's knowledge. Just my experience......

This video seems like a Canon Advertisement. Have the GH2 shoot that same shot and I bet it will look more detailed. The 5DMKIII is a nice camera but sharpness is not one of its strong points.

Well of course talents is always the priority. When it comes to filmmakers coming from California or reality shoots and Documentary, like I said, about 9-10 times they are asking for a 5D Mark II. The 9-10 times I am talking about is among all DSLR cameras. I have shot in Las Vegas for the past 4 years and owned GH1's and GH2's and of course a lot of my clients didn't care as long as they saw my portfolio and were happy with it, but when it comes down to Major producers and Directors coming from Cali, they know what they want and they know that if they travel over to Las Vegas and can not find a RED one or better, They have no choice but to get a DSLR to do the job and that is when they choose a 5D Mark II. You can ask Philip Bloom or anyone you want FROM EXPERIENCE, the bigger gigs (hollywood producers and Directors) will choose the 5D. Now if we talk about just cameras itself, I have about 50% of the Hollywood Producers/Directors asking for Sony Ex1 or Ex3 for their reality shoots.

Lets just end this here as it seems like a different world over there..... I primarily work in Music videos and Shorts + editing. Actual cameras here in Florida are really not a concern. If you shoot 5d, 7d, Gh2 or Red everyone knows this and is accepted. If in Cali they ask for something specific that's cool, but I actually work on my own content and have blessed and will continue to do that. Like I said we shoot videos easily in 25k range and we mix Gh2 with Red all the time.

We have shot videos on RED's as well, in fact my wife is a certified RED operator and certified Steadicam operator. Do we own a RED? No! We just either borrow from our friend or rent it. I loved the GH2, don't get me wrong but when you have most of the professional clients requesting it..then of course that is what you go with. Have we mixed up footages with the GH2, I recall on the Manny Pacquaio Documentary by Leon Gast that will be coming out by 2013..that one of the interviews..The Producer Ken Mayer opted to go with the GH2 because the Canon was givng off a yellow tone on a certain shot. Yes, our company has been blessed with many gigs from big hollywood directors/producers, music directors/producers as well and in fact we will be heading to Florida to shoot a "Behind the scenes" DVD for the reality show "Tanked" (ATM) ..we will be shooting at Shaqs place to shoot his aquarium and some interviews. Anyways, Good Luck and have fun shooting.
