Does P2 work in a regular PCMCIA slot

Hi,

Can you transfer the files from a P2 card using a standard PCMCIA slot or do you need the pano deck?

thanks..

Funny you should ask!! We are having a *wonderful* discussion along the lines of this topic in another thread!! :)

The P2 is based on the CardBus, so it should work with the PCMCIA Type II CardBus slots. Guess we'll see soon enough!! ~reservoir~

You definitely can, this is the existing workflow that people using the SPX800 P2 camera have been using for the last year or so.

Thanks,

Does anyone know of a PCMCIA 'drive' that will go into a standard PC (ATX case) bay for a resonable price?

It works in a standard PCMCIA slot.

Right now the only drive I am aware of is the 5 card drive, which lists around $2500.

Hope that helps.

Best,

Jan

Jan,

Sorry, I'm not following you. I understand P2 and PCMCIA, I'm an IT professional, but what are you referring to when you say "5 card drive"?

I think she's referring to a Panasonic 'drive' unit (looks like a 5.25" hard drive) that has 5 P2 slots in it - hence 5-card drive.

-The other Jerry.

They've made a unit that acts like a professional deck, that takes 5 cards and lets you ff/rewind/search, etc., and can play back files that span across multiple cards. It's an accessory for a PC that fits in a 5.25" bay.

*EDIT*: DOH! Jan beat me to it!

There are PCMCIA card adapters for desktop computers available from several sources for under $70. Don't know if they do or don't work to read P2 cards; can't imagine why they wouldn't.

Jan,

The P2 5-card "drive" says it requires P2 software working under Windows. Please tell me the Mac OS X version of those same drivers will be available soon?

yup... I bet at NAB there will be an announcement.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and more versatile to buy a laptop with that money? Is there something special about this unit?

What do these P2 cards run? Anyone know.

I'm trying to justify the difference between a $6 DV tape and an expensive P2 card, putting aside the whole workflow benefit.

Well, there are 2 very large differences:

1) P2 cards can be reused a minimum of 100,000 times, tapes can only be used once.

2) You can't record DVCPro50 or DVCProHD onto a DV tape.

Today a 4GB P2 card is roughly $1700.
But I wouldn't be suprised if it was cheaper on monday :)

Agreed!!

Pay to have your heads cleaned / replaced a few times and see how much P2 grows on you!!

Head cleaning? What's that? :)

And also pay to get yourself a deck for your tapes if you don't have one...

The idea of P2 blows me away, it's just the recording times that need nailing for long form guys.

Thinking about it, if P2 (SD) technology speeds up enough, then by the time long form clients are demanding lots of HD, the storage size will be as long as tape is now, and if they've chucked a tape drive on this baby, then we'll be OK. Well I know I will be OK in New Zealand, I mean we don't even really know what HD is here. 16:9 is "flash" and "high tech" here.

Can hardly believe that. All the Kiwis I know are a bunch of pretty smart people.
But even in case if, why don't you introduce NZ to 16x9 and HD? People will be
flabbergasted. Imagine - the Southern Alps or the two big Sounds on wide screen... Napier and the Gannets, Vineyards at Marlborough, the whales off the Kaikoora coast and to finish, a walk through Abel Tasman.
