Does OIS really works ok?

Hello,

I have experiece with Canon XL1 and their optical stabilizer is amazing. I own a DVX-100AE for about one month and have shot 4 hours material for a documentary. Most of it handheld.

I shot with OIS on all the time but the results seem very bad. I don't really think the OIS does too much to help.

I have read articles and also the manual but I would like to have advice from users that really have used and tested OIS.

Thanks

Josep

I normally only use it when doing hand held shots.....never on tripod since I think you may lose some image crispness by using it.

It is some what subtle while filming but I think once editing you see how much shake is minimized with OIS on. ...I normally use it only for rock video shoots where I'm also fighting a crowd that keeps bumpimg me too...doesn't save that but when you settle in for shots I think it helps.

Just my 3 cent reply with a limited 1 cent rebate for the month of july. :)

I think it helps temendously, at least in my experience. If your shooting 24p handheld it is going to look worse than 60i handheld generally speaking. 24p works best on a tripod with nice mellow movements. It can get dicey when going handheld even with OIS on.

From experience - I do not recommend it when using a wide angle adapter (.6x) on the DVX100. It has produced some matting in frame requiring me to recomp some clips.

BTW: Best way to tell if it works for you is to shoot a test.

Hi,

I have of course shot some tests but it's hard to find the difference. I will and have shot on 25p.

I think I will have to figure a way to steady the camera itself.

Try to zoom in to the lens limit and hold the camera framing a subject with and without OIS.

OIS helps a huge amount...

Shoot for a couple hours without.. as your arms get more and more fatigued.. you'll see an incredible amount of shake... especially when viewing the footage at full res.. it is horrid..

the OIS eliminates the subtle shakes that your muscles make.. the ones you won't even notice until you watch the footage on a larger screen..

trust me it does good things..
