Does New DBVX ship with capture software?

Hi Guys,
Do new DVX's ship with software/ drivers? I'm asking because I just bought a new Pentium D chipper (HP Media computer). But I can't get the damned thing to recognize my DVX100 (I love my DVX) when I plug in with Firewire. I am trying to isolate the problem and as I bought my DVX used I am wondering about drivers and software.

As always thanks for whatever you can tell me.

Although unlikely, the firewire port may be burned out on your camera.

More likely, it is a problem with the computer. I'm on a Mac and my memory of Windows is fading, but I'll try to help diagnose. Does it work with other camcorders?

Hey earon.. try a different cable. As wells said try a different camera if you can, or find someone that lives in Vancouver (like me) and see if you can bring thier camera over to see if it works on thier system.

No, no software or drivers are included (or even available). If the cable and firewire port are working, it should just show up automatically on the desktop.

Hi, Wells
I did a complete capyure using scenalyzer three nights ago. I used my Canon Optura XI. It worked just fine.

The following day I was getting intermittent recognition on the computer screen, and then recognition would stop (still still using the Canon).

I then tried the DVX and still no recognition.
I then installed Canon software and plugged the Canon XI back in. Nope... no recognition.

I then pluged the Canon into the Firewire port at the back of the computer. .. no recognition.

Then I plugged the DVX into the Firewire port at the back - no recognition.

This makes little sense as far as the cameras go. The DVX had a complete overhaul by Panasonic lat fall. The Canon has had little use.

My hunch right now is that the problem area is either
(1) The Firewire cable
(2) The Firewire card and connected ports (device manager says firewire card is working properly).

OK - (a) I'll buy and try a different Firewire cable
(be) I will uninstall and reinstall te firewire card drivers just to be safe

That seems thorough. Any suggestions. I'll update tomorrow.

Thanks guys,
Earon

Hey dude,

I have had this problem before, and it was related to the driver. I was having a driver conflict, even though device manager was saying the device was working properly.
Maybe you are having the same conflict. Try to see if you have the right driver. Remove all the drivers you have, then install the one that came with your card. If that doesn't work, then try to install it with the Microsoft one.

Good luck with that!

All the best

Fidel.

Hi Wells,
Installing the software for the cameras was suggested by the dealer. The Canon came with software, so I also thought I'd check to see if the DVX came with software. I tested the Canon with software installed last night and it made no difference. What I can say is that both cameras worked fine with my P3 laptop (which now has hardware problems and is in service).

Fidel: I will try to uninstall and reinstall the Firewire drivers today as well.

Jarred: Thanks for offering to test with your own DVX - will keep that as an option once I do all the other tests. Hey, great picture of you and your lady! Very genuine!

Barry: Thanks for clarifying that DVX doesn't come with software. Based on a comment you made recently on Vegas I just decided to stay with Vegas and a new PC (rather than switch to Final Cut and Mac). It seems most everyone in Vancouver is on FCP and their influence is powerful, especially when you think of doing editing collaborations. BTW, still having a hgreat time with your DVX book and DVD.

If I can't get this figured out I'm taking the computer back. I have seven days remaining. As you can imagine I'm not willing to put a brand new computer into service; on principle that would be ridiculous.

By the way, thanks guys for all of you swarming in to help with this problem. Am going out in an hour to buy new cable and test for Firewire cable malfunction. This remains a group par excellence!!

Will keep updating.
Cheers,
Earon

do you have an external drive or another device that's also using a firewire port?

I have an external drive that is hooked up via firewire and occasionally will override the dvx connection and won't allow my computer to recognize the dvx... I just have to shut off my hd when it gives me that problem.

Yes, I have a hard drive for video clip storage. I took your advice and disconnected it. I connected the Canon playback deck and it seems to be working with scenalyzer. The camis rewinding at the moment. If this works it probably means I will have to connect a separate firewire card and hope the separate cards will prevent interference. Will let you know what happens.

Problem solved!

dj200423, your diagnosis was spot on! My new HP Media Center PC has a panel on the front which has 1 6 pin Firewire plug in and 2 USB 2 plug ins. There is also a Firewire plug in at the back. I had a hard drive and printer connected to the USB's. When I plugged in the camera the computer refused to recognize it.

So I guess I will install an additional firewire card at the back, and hopefully it will be on a different circuit (it that's possible on PC's). Of course, my NAC friends all say "just buy a Mac".

Thanks again to everyone for your support. Teamwork does seem to work.
