does it matter what I use top get my files from SD cards to PC?

hi all,

just specing up a new PC to edit AVCHD from my GH1 and I added a cheap memory card reader.

I then had a thought that this might not be the fastest or most reliable way of copying data from an SDHC card to my PC.

Is there anything that people can recommend to copy files quickly and perhaps even copying multiple cards at once? Would it just be a cheap USB SD card reader?

Is internal better than external? Or does none of this make a difference.

Many thanks

Hi,

I had the Sandisk support contacted a while ago because my class 10 sdhc cards would not write or read nearly as fast as the promised 30Mb/s. They answered that I´d have to use a very recent card reader from them to achieve that speed on my pc. I had an old Sandisk card reader until then. Now I have a Sandisk Image Mate and I get rates between 21 and 28MB/s depending of what files to copy and in which direction. But I got it only because my old one broke down recently.

If you need the speed for copying you´d have to consider this, but even that image mate isn´t really that crazy expensive with 25 Euros.

I don´t know about multiple copyings simultaneously. You´d need 2 or more card readers of course. And the usb host will take a few full speed class 10 speeding copyings until there´s no bandwidth left, but why are you in such a hurry? :) I suggest one card reader that´s fast and you´re good to go.

the only reason i mentioned doing it quickly is i was surprised how slow it was to copy 16gb of data from a full card using my internal reader recently. If i got home from a wedding with 8 cards, thats a lot of time.

I'm getting a new motherboard with USB 3.0 so what do you think about a USB 3.0 reader like this?

if anyone is still looking at this, what about buying 4 or 5 cheap SD card readers and copying files from a card in each simultaneously?
