Does AF work with lenses of other manufacturer?

It'll work with any Micro Four Thirds lens; Panasonic makes M43 lenses, but so does Olympus, etc. As long as the lens conforms to the m43 standards, the GH1 should work with it.

Well, that depends on how they manufacture their lenses. Some are compatible with single-use autofocus, others are compatible with continuous autofocus. I don't know how many lenses have been designed to be video-compatible.

Sometimes people forget that the GH1 is a stills camera, and the profound majority (nearly exlusive, actually) of stills lenses are designed specifically for stills. I had an opportunity to use an Olympus 14-35, and it was kind of ridiculous -- it was incredibly noisy, slow, gritty, and the iris changes sounded like a machine gun (well, quieter, but in terms of the pattern of sound).

If a lens isn't specifically designed to be video-compatible, you can't expect it to work with the GH1's video mode. But it will still work in stills mode.

how bad is it? i thought 2.0 was supposed to make it awesome.. along with the $1000 price tag, it should atleast be great in manual mode and picture quality

Don't understand... Shouldn't the Pancake 20mm 1.7 have continuous AF/AE function that supports for both photos and movies?

This link:

It says:

AF tracking is slower than the counterparts in HD movie support Micro Four Thirds lens(LUMIX VARIO HD lens). Also operational noise in AF may be recorded while motion picture recording.

Can anyone confirm?

Barry, did you manage to get 14-35 to autofocus on a GH1? I've tested several Olympus 4/3 lenses on my GH13 with Olympus 4/3-to-m4/3 adapter (v2) and only was able to autofocus the 14-54 II. I haven't actually tried the 14-35, but given that (unlike 14-54 II) it was not designed for contrast detection operation I presumed it will not work. If it does, that's great news. FWIW, all these Olympus 4/3 lenses autofocused without issue on Olympus m43 bodies.

More like $2K price tag. The ED 35-100mm F2.0 I tried in fully manual mode (on GH13) produced some sharp stills wide open. Both 2.0 lenses are very well built lenses as well, but quite bulky.
