F55: Does 18mm RPP covers F55 sensor?

I personally haven't tried it but have tried the Red 18-50 zoom on the F55. It covers the entire sensor. Of course, these are two entirely different lenses, but the 18-50 does work.

I guess the question is, why wouldn't it?

F55 sensor is a tiny bit smaller than 4K 16x9 on Red One or Epic, from what I know.

Great! My RPP lenses will work then :)

Ned, i think you had a lot of experience with F55 already? WHat is your opinion on it? Comparing to Epic, Alexa?

There is lack of footage from F55...

I've had experience but Nate has had a lot more experience. The Sony F cameras can look great but likewise they can look awful if you shoot them wrong. I also get very uptight about making head to head comparisons. F55 stands out in the global shutter. That makes a big difference. F55 stands out in the extended color gamut. What's not to love about Alexa? But in terms of actually being able to own the camera unless you really have the work to justify it, F55 gives you a lot of camera for far less investment. Alexa is really more in the F65 comparison range.

As far as footage, it is so hard to judge from web footage. And it is so subjective.

I'm being a little cagey because the question is a hard one for me to answer. The best answer I suppose comes from trying to shoot both under the tutelage of someone who knows the cameras. Then grade the footage properly and view on proper monitor. Between your comfort with shooting the camera and your impression of the footage you will find your answer.

Personally, I would own an F55 over an Epic. I don't shoot at F65 levels but it's a hard choice between Alexa and F65. In NYC market, Alexa rules so a shrewd investor could keep the camera rented and busy. But some pretty great looking stuff has been shot with F65 so there is no creative reason to follow the herd.

I know it's silly judge cameras from youtube clips, that's the reason i'm asking your opinion, who worked with alexa and f55, to see how f55 stands in terms of image quality..

Thanks guys regarding sensor coverage.

I'd put F55 and Alexa on similar ground, image quality wise. Equally sharp, equivalent latitude. F55 needs a little more attention in post to get an image that "feels" like Alexa, using good S-Log2 LUTs, ACES, or a colorist who truly understands why a Sony looks like a Sony and is ok with spending a little more time getting a good base look. If Alexa is what you are after, put the camera in S-Log2, S-Gamut and walk away.

There's a reason Arri is lowering prices on older-stock non-XT Alexas :-) It's that good.

XAVC codec is dirtier than ProRes, but grades like a 10bit codec. SR codec coming later this summer should put it on much more even ground with ProResHQ or 444. The XAVC is still very good, much farther ahead of most internal codecs.

Raw on 55 is tremendous. Lower noise than Epic, more latitude. Probably more on par with Arriraw from Alexa, but with more pixels.
