Documentary in Georgia

Hmmm, I have been asked if I am interested in going to Georgia, and not the US one.

This is to document a non-denominational church's missionary trip. It would be me and one or two other people in the crew (Director and boom op). My way and salary will be paid.

I have done third world work prior to this, but in central Mexico. There is definitely a part of me that wants to do this, but on the other hand, I will be gone for about a month or so, not to mention the political situation over there.

Part of me wishes it was the Georgia in the US, at least there all I have to fear is mosquitoes and being forced to marry some woman with 20 kids and one tooth. LOL, just kidding.

Anyone know how things are going there? I listen to the news, but the US news is slanted.

Tomorrow or Tuesday, I am going to talk to someone at the State Dept. to get the low down.

Had a meeting with the group today. They absolutely want me to head up the documentary aspect of the trip, and then a turn-around to Peru right afterwards (? haven't decided about this, kind of quick). This is with an established missionary group through the Baptist church.

Anyone else doing this type of footage? This appeals to me on so many levels. The Georgia trip will be strictly a medical mission, and I am not "Doc" for no reason. But I would like feedback from those close to the region. I spoke to a friend who was from Armenia today, and he says, right now, it's no problem.

Advice? Feedback? Anyone?

I see the standard warnings, but Mexico has the same warnings and I have done work down there before. Care to elaborate?

Hey now, dental hygiene has advanced a lot around here. Most now are only missing one tooth.

I am probably not going to take my HVX with me, probably going to take my handi-cam and a decent tripod. Gotta pare things down to the bare essentials. A couple of bricks of tapes, an adapter for charging, one or two AB Elipz's. Must contact Anton Bauer to see if they make an adapter for my little handi-cam.

Or I'll get short-term insurance on my gear. Gotta figure this out.

Take the HVX. I just got back from overseas recently, and the footage I shot turned out really well. I wish I could have had the quality of the HVX, though. I had the option of taking a "lesser" camera than the one I did and I was so glad I didn't. The thing is, you can't just go back and shoot some stuff later that didn't look so good. I'm not saying take a 35mm adapter (unless you think it wouldn't be a burden), but don't skimp out on the shot.

Yes it weighs more. Yes, you'll be a little more sore. Yes ... it's totally worth it. Trust me.

I don't pay the warnings any attention. Technically Georgia is all kinds of messed up politically. Mostly dealing with Separatist movements. I don't think there is much risk for Americans. But whenever I travel abroad, I am Canadian for all intents and purposes. :)

My last name is French, so not so hard to pretend I'm French Canadian, and my father is from Quebec. I have a horrible French accent so I'm safe. LOL! And I am adept at the use of the French Tickler, n'est pais?

I'll accept the flames for the last couple of comments. I deserve them, funny or not.
