Documentary Filmed with DVX

Hey, just thought I'd pass on some DVX news...I am a news photographer and just did a story on a director from L.A. who filmed and is now actively shopping his documentary around to several companies who are interested. He's had several offers. It is a doc on Iwo Jima. He's assuming it's going to cable television, although the station is unclear at this point. It was filmed on a DVX100 and edited on FCP. I saw bits and pieces of it while I was shooting the story. It looked really good, really professional. Another DVX success story I thought I'd pass along. ;D

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

It is where the famous photo of the five soldiers raising the American flag was taken.

One of the more famous battles of WWII, at least on the Pacific side of things.

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

I read somewhere recently that except one, they all were killed within three weeks of when the photo was taken. And they all are buried in towns where they were born (unusual for WWII soldiers).

(if we are talking about the same photo).

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

I hadn't heard that.

The only one that I know of is Ira Hayes and this is because Johnny Cash wrote a song about him.

I guess he came back to the States and was celebrated and honored but developed a drinking problem, mainly due to the fact that he was a Native American (Pima) and there were no opportunities for them to do much with their lives.

According to the song, he got drunk and fell into a ditch with two inches of water and died/drowned.  The irony being that the Pima were stuggling because they had their water rights stolen from them and couldn't grow crops.  So this guy dies in a ditch with two inches of water in it.

Another disposable hero.

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

I (and others) stand corrected. It is the same photo, indeed. I did a quick search on Google - there were six soldiers, not five. I read somewhere about Mike Strank (being from Czechoslovakia), but I didn't remember the details correctly. Here is a link to the Iwo Jima flag raisers' fact sheet:

I drive often by the sculpture monument in Arlington, VA which was sculpted based on that photo. I have to stop by one day...

you are joking right? heard of WWII?

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

If all people did know, there would be little point making a documentary on the subject, or am I wrong?

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

We are all born ignorant.
Most of us are still growing and learning and know to be tolerant of those that are less knowledgable.
The free exchange of knowledge is priceless. Please do not stifle curiosity with condescending remarks.

This is a great post. I/we are bordering on political now but I have never been prouder of this forum before N.American indigenous rights were addressed. I am in the southwest U.S. How many tribes throughout the U.S. and Canada? How many DVXs. Do the internet math. Could we all collaborate and make the EPIC documentary?

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

Blessings to all of you this holiday season ...

If anyone is interested in learning more about Iwo Jima, and those men raising the flag, the definitive book (IMHO) on this is called "Flags of our Fathers" by James Bradley. This book tells of the lives of each man in the famous picture, both before, during, and after Iwo Jima. It is amazing and inspiring what soldiers endured to capture this little piece of volcanic rock in the South Pacific during World War II.

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

How many tribes through out the U.S. and Canada?  More than you can count, buddy.  I'm a very proud Cherokee, political activist, and a DVX100a user.

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

I just buried my grandfather this past weekend...he was at Iwo Jima on a U.S. Naval Destroyer during WWII. He lied about his age in order to join at the age of 16 - he wanted to play his part in defending this great nation.

I'm glad to see these brave men and women are still being remembered and their stories are being passed on to the younger generations who otherwise would forget where we came from and why we are free.

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

Hey eat@me heard of Gallipoli, Long Tan or Tabrook?
Probably not because you have learnt the history of WW2/WW1/Vietnam with an American slant. I didn't know what Iwo Jima was either but thats not because I don't know anything about histroy, or military history inparticular, but because I have learnt it from a different perspective.
Just because something is obvious to you doesn't mean it is common knowledge.

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

k guys,   you need to really tread carefully here.

EVOLVE,

i removed your post. sorry , but there is a rule concerning politics here at DVXUser. no political posts are allowed. this thread has been pretty friendly and circumvented being actually political. your post however was neither friendly or un-politcal. please refrain from making political based posts in the future...espscially such heated politcal posts.  there are plenty of politcial forums to be heard in.

if there are blatantly political statments being made in a thread please do not respond, and they will be moderated as seen fit.

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

Neil, i didn't realize that there was a rule concerning political postings. i responded to Larry R's post, which is pretty political in a yah-freedom rhetorical nonsense kinda way. In any case, was not trying to break the rules of the forum so I apologize. Tawsy's post wasn't exactly friendly either was it. And I agree with Tawsy. As far as my post being friendly goes, it wasn't. I didn't know it had to be in any forum. Further, the subject of "the land of the free" is a hotly debated topic, and friendly isn't required. So let's leave it at my post was political. Again, I am sorry as I did not know the threads couldn't be political.
I guess if I leave pro-U.S. statements that's ok.
incidentally it's "a"political, not "un"political...same as there is no grammatical correctness to "un"american.
Have a nice day  :-X

Re: Documentary Filmed with DVX

sorry Evolve. i know the rule is not posted anywhere. but now you know. i didnt address tawsys post in part because i cant really understand what he is actually saying. at least it is unlcear. theres plenty of mods in this section.. they chose not to remove/modify it either.. what can i say?

anyway there is a difference between somone being patriotic and being political. even if you think the patriotism is unwarranted. it only becomes political when someone adresses the patriotism from a political point of view, or if the patriotism was being displayed in a politcal sense. anyway theres a fine line to walk.. and while it may be grey in some areas your post was surely out of line. lets not take this to the whole only pro american posts are allowed thing.. the owner of this whole site is canadian. im only enforcing the rules as i see it. when i said theres other forums for political stuff i meant other websites entirely .. nowhere on DVXuser are politcial posts allowed.

..grammar? well, ..welcome to the internet. and thanks for your well meant concern about the quality of my day. ::)..lol welcome to DVXUser.. were a freindly group here and we cant help but like it that way. check out some of the new cool stuff in the grabs section .. lots of aspiring filmmakers and videographers. welcome aboard.
