documentary and backing up

Hey there,

Doing a two camera hvx200 shoot on location all over the world. We shoot to firestores then normally dump to hard drives for edit with FCP. Any recommendations for my producer who is requesting we send regular clones back to the States? Only thing I can think of is using some G-Raids, however if we're talking about backing up maybe 100 gigs a day, is it worth it to invest in so many smaller drives or is there another solution? We'd probably need to send them every couple of days.

Thanks,

Howie

You can always look at uploading your dailies to an FTP site... but I think going with hard drives is your best bet. Go with some of the 320GB Graids and fill them up with 100gbs per day over a three day period. That is probably your most stable and reliable solution.

What about an LTO2 drive from the laptop? -SCSI connection via a pcmcia card. I use retrospect on mac almost every day, and it works fine. Tape is also a reliable medium... if you have the money, there are also mxf aware lto3 drives now from quantum, best of both worlds: speed and mxf awarenes.

One hundred gigs per day equals a bunch of drives to be sending back every third day. The last crew I worked with was sending a hard drive back (internationally) ever second week. It worked for them, though I was doing my own backups to optical media (DVD).

Sending DVD's in the mail is pretty reliable and tough to breaak.
