Doctor Sleep

Watched this tonight on a big screen with a big sound system, and while it's not without merit, there were times when I swear I could hear Stanley Kubrick turning in his grave.

As a sequel to "The Shining", it seemed to take as many cues from Tony Scott's "The Hunger" as it did from Kubrick, but only in an underwhelming, not edgy enough, kind of way.

If you're going to mess with a classic bring your A-game.

Yeah, I didn't care for this one. Didn't find it remotely scary. The Rosie character was miscast. She was not intimidating or frightening. All the nonsense with her and her tribe and the 'steam' eating was dumb, too literal to be scary, and seemed recycled from King's IT. I liked the young girl Abra and her relationship with Danny, that was the only part of the movie that worked for me.

This was a mockery. I actually bailed on it not long into it - right after the first scene at the movie theater... that was more than I could take. Life is too short to waste time watching garbage movies - if they are that bad, they are not going to improve, so bail. First and foremost, it just wasn't coming together. The fact that there was zero fear or dread generated (just try to compare to The Shining!) was of course a death sentence at the most fundamental level - a horror that has no fright or tension is a failure no questions asked, like a comedy that's not funny, a thriller that does not thrill. Game over. But it wasn't even competently made from the point of view of how the scenes flowed - there was no thread that compelled one to follow from one scene to the next - it was a collection of scenes and not a narrative. And the scenes were uninvolving, and dragged on forever - like the scene of Danny on the bench talking to Carl... on and on and on and on it went, a massive bore and way too long. An atrocity. Really disgusting that they took the legacy of The Shining and exploited it to such poor effect.

It got worse. The third Act, in particular, was a hopeless mess.
