Do you have to make it dark when Black Balancing?

I am asking because until now i always put the Lens Cap on and dialed in ND4 for Black Balancing.. I read to do this somewhere on the Internet ages ago and sticked to it, not verifying if its right..
Now in Barrys DVD i saw the AF100 closing the Sensor with some black metal by itself when Black Balancing...

So..It would save some time if i can just go to Black Balancing directly without all the fuss of actually making dark Surroundings..

thanks in Advance...

thanks for the answer.. I know now it makes it dark for itself.. :)

the Question is do i also have to do something in Addition to make the Black Balance? ..bright sunshine outside.. plenty of light going through my 0,95 Nokton... is the black metal part of the AF100 covering the Sensor enough..
asking this because people put the Lens Cap on etc.. but actually it seems this is not necessary... just want to make sure..

For instance..How do you Black Balance, Igelkott?

All you need to do is hit the Black Balance button. The Camera caps itself. See page 33 of the Operation Manual.

Jan,

While using a custom White Balance any attempt to Black Balance causes the camera to do another White Balance. This is undesirable in some circumstances, so occasionally I'll flip the White Balance to the preset 5600/3200* before Black Balancing, & flip it back to the custom White Balance before filming.

Do you know if this defeats the purpose?

How about capping the lens instead so it's too dark to re-White Balance?

Thanks,
Bern

Some cameras require you to manually cap the lens, but the AF100 has a built-in iris specifically for that purpose. No capping needed.
