Do you have flare...

I've just put some black tape onto the inside of my Adaptimax adaptor and it has immediately reduced the amount of purple lens flare on my 85mm Nikon lens. Although I can still cause it to return at certain angles.

Inside the adaptor there is a ring of brushed chrome on the edge nearest the camera which seems to be causing the problem.

One relatively simple fix for shiny interiors (simpler than paint) is black adhesive backed velcro (not the side with the hooks) it comes in rolls and is meant to be cut with scissors to-size. I've used it in the past on things like large-format camera lensboards but I found it worked well on the inside of a cheapo adapter I was using a couple years ago.

You can get adhesive backed flock from the model shop also. It will be thinner than velcro and a more absorbent black.

Both my Adaptimax's are now matte black and flocked.

Will be critically testing tomorrow.

My C/Y Zeiss adapter is now matte black instead of shiny black internally.

THanx everyone for responding.

I have an Adaptimax adaptor and I often get flares when using my Nikon primes. On my first shoot with the camera I didn't know of the issue and every now and then there is a shot where a purple haze can be seen across the image.

I now know what to look out for and although it is a pain I can usually deal with it using the flags on my matte box or by using some creatively moulded "black-wrap".

I might look into seeing if I can do anything about the inside of the Adaptimax adaptor.

Same lenses and same adapter having the same issue...I've just been having to reposition my shots or do something creative to adjust how much light hits it.

I ran into this exact issue shooting an interview with a large window behind the subject. I had a Canon FD on the GH2, and was able to flag all of the flare out of the shot, however the AF100 with a Nikon lens on it had a terrible flare from the window that was impossible to mask and had a sort of ghostly effect on the image. I have seen this problem pop up at random times only when using that Nikon adapter though on either the GH2 or the AF100... The adapter in question is the el cheapo at Rainbow Imaging.

Tested... and...my problem is now gone.

Interiors of the 2x Adaptimax adapters were sprayed matt black with self etching paint ( after prepping surfaces) and additionally...I applied self adhesive black flocking material to the internal flange closest to the sensor ( the culprit section).

Fixed and well pleased.

Where do you find self etching paint and what do you do to the surfaces?!? :) I need to do this to my FS100 adapter!

My model maker colleagues had this and they do the application with a spray gun.

Things that I fabricate in metal ...eg brackets, plates (and my Zhuter Slider) ..all get this treatment because its quick and looks cool

Prep was light abrasion with small wheel , de grease and spray.

Flocking was fiddly but easy enough.

Hey Shooter -- so seems like your flaring issue is all gone now? You basically just sprayed the interior of your adaptimax with black spray paint correct? I don't really follow what you mean about the flocking, I've never heard of this process. Do you think the spray paint would be enough? I have some of that in the garage now.

Thanks!

Issue has gone yes.

Yes the interior was sprayed ( matt self etch) and I then used self adhesive black flock onto the the interior of the back section. A circular strip in a ring about 2/3 inch wide. (13 mm).

The paint alone may work but the flock is more light absorbent and probably works better still.

Google flock paper ...but it is basically velvet material shaved fibres stuck on a backing paper.
