I've been fiddling about with dynamic range and so forth on my new 5D and I certainly feel that something as simple as reducing the sharpening and crucially contrast can improve things to a decent degree, I also don't like saturated colours to have them down too - I'm using the common -4, -4, -2 (sharp/contrast/sat) settings.
I wouldn't say the improvement is dramatic though, it just seems to retain the information a little better, as if there's a more gradual roll off to black, versus a more abrupt one w/standard or even neutral profile.
I've not tried to do any grading yet so I don't know if the black areas of the reduce contrast image retain more information than the black areas of Std profile, one would assume black is black regardless, but I'll check that later.
I've also just added the super flat and marvels cine profile and will try to look at them later and see what I think. Super flat certainly appears to build on the -4 -4 -2 settings above and, looking at the curve in PSEditor increases the blacks and reduces the highlights, so in theory should do a good job at reducing the contrast.
Although I do remember reading someone one cautional point suggesting it doesn't actually retain any more information, it just changes everything to being more grey. I've not tested that yet, maybe this evening when it's dark.
I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about Picture Styles, what they use or what they believe is the best for dynamic range etc?
