do you guys want butter? super smooth slow motion

awesome post yzmotoxer the resolution is not great on this and deinterlacing in shake makes a huge difference as i can see i just wish i had shake. it would be awesome to see this done with some resolution cards

30% Speed

30% Speed

Yeah I don't have any though. That would be interesting to do. I did another version of this with the same footage by taking the 40% speed result of deinterlacing in shake and ran the FCP export back to shake and slowed it down 75% bringing the final speed to 30% of the original speed and I would consider it usable. It is not amazing but I would have no problem using it as a real shot. Plus when you consider that you would have to shoot at 80fps to achieve this, it seems pretty good. The youtube version can be found: HERE and the quicktime download can be found: HERE

ive tried many many many different techniques to try and get the smoothest slowest possible slow motion you can get with a dvx and they all failed me except for this one that i am about to share with you guys i will put up a clip of this momentarily

(this will only work with interlaced video)

ok so the first thing your going to want to do is turn the progressive scan off and shoot this at 60i with a shutter of 1/2000(make sure you have tons of light)

next step is to open up final cut and make a new sequence and change the editing time base to 23.98

nest import the footage into final cut with the basic DV-NTSC48khz setting
(make sure when logging the clip you name it something so that you can find the clip later)

now open up Cinema tools and open the clip in cinema tools and conform the clip to 23.98fps

next import your now conformed clip into your final cut 23.98 sequence

copy the clip and place it right under the existing clip

add a de-interlacing filter to both the top and bottom clip the top clip being upper and the bottom clip being lower

add a blink filter to the top clip and make sure the first two boxes are at 1 and the last box is at 0

slow both clip to 50% render and enjoy your super smooth slow motion

you may want to crop it a little because it does have a little flicker on the bottom some might say it looses a little bit of resolution also

Thanks for the post. I have a question: why do you hve to add a blink filter to your top clip? What effect does that have?

It blocks the "bad" field from showing for that frame. Since the footage is slowed to 50% in FCP, each field is shown for a full frame instead of half of a frame. The blink blocks the upper layer for a frame so the lower layer can show through for a frame, and this continues.
