Do you find your DSLR Sampling Rate Poor ?

Now that these DSLR cameras are out and starting to show great results, but how do they really hold up when color grading, composting, zooming in on a shot in post, etc.. I think they're great for internet video, but when trying to adjust levels in post you can really start to see how easily they break.

The reason I bring this up, I have both D90 & HVX200a + FS100 + Letus setups and my HVX holds its weight in gold every time. These DSLRs shoot compressed video and that's what I think they need to improve before anything else. I really love how portable they are and the extremely easy setup, but it boils down to the compression for me.

Anyone else care to join in ?

Believe it or not, I think these companies read the stuff that we write and this is how they keep the ball rolling.

The d90 was the first to the fray, if you compare it with the 7D a lot of progress has already been made and many of the d90's short commings have been addressed there.

There is still a ways to go for perfection, but for price, ease of use, and form factor its hard to beat.

I was easily able to shoot an entire scene in a restaurant with my D90 and just a zoom h4n on the table for sound without asking a single person, they thought we were just snapping shots. This would not be possible with a pro-sumer cam.

just food for thought.

Jon I totally agree with you on the ease of setup part stated in my first post, I'm just saying the picture really breaks down when CC in post. I actually filmed a few things in the grocery store a few days ago playing around with my son, not one person bothered us or even took a look. Now if that was my hvx letus setup they would have probably told us to turn it off in the first 5 mins. Yes as for price you can't beat it, but I would pay more money if the camera had better color sampling hands down. Let's hope Red can tackle this!!

Have that scene online to check out ? How do you like the zoom ?

Yeah , i have the scene online, it is on my latest short that im just about finished with. I still need to fix a few sound mastering issues, and get a few transition shots, but here is my latest draft.

Let me know what you think.

I love the H4n so far, but im still trying to master using it, some of the shots (mostly indoors) were filmed with a mic attatched to a C stand that was folded and used like a boom, and some of the shots (mostly outside and in the restarant, were straight off the H4n).

I did make the mistake a few times of either placing the H4n (when not using the XLR mic) to close to the subject, or not putting on the windsock (one of my scenes audio was ruined by this because it was slightly windy).

This was my first project using it (or using any type of sound recorder really), so next time i will know a lot more about factoring it into my workflow.
