do smokers have a lower iq?

Listing a bunch of people who have been addicts in their lifetime doesn't mean anything. You say these people are smart; I say they're only smart if they overcame their addiction. If their addiction killed them or their lives were a long stretch of painful experiences because of the drug, I call them idiots.

You can tell me that you think a person who takes drugs until the drugs kill them are smart people, but I'm going to disagree with you. I've seen smart people find a way, unassisted, out of addiction; I've seen dumb ass people fail to do it. But again, maybe you consider intelligence and common sense to be apples and oranges. I don't.

But you're welcome to your position.
Chamber, not only do I smoke a pack a day, I have an IQ of 168. I bet that sends you into a world of confusion, since your model of who is intelligent or not is based on the subject's relative decisions alone.

I find your position to be intolerant, and even unintelligent. Maybe you should open your own closet, and let's see what addictions you have, and then we can judge whether or not you meet our criteria for intelligence. Addictions come in many forms, even arrogance is an addiction. (But youth, whether in age or maturity, has an aura of superiority around it, regardless of what those elders and more mature individuals say). And here, you are exhibiting know-it-all arrogance beyond belief that only screams "lack of maturity".

Get over yourself. You don't smoke, good for you. But to take such a conceited and arrogant position because of such just says you are lacking in other areas (many areas, actually) of intelligence.
Learn tolerance and acceptance. Just because a person does not meet your criteria, does not make them any less of a person. Or any less intelligent. Smoking is just a choice.

Take your spanking, young man. Grow the F*** up. Otherwise I'll whoop your bare butt in public here on DVX (metaphorically speaking:shocked:). Spare the rod, spoil the child type of thing going on here.

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion on the matter.
As for me, I prefer to judge people on the whole of their lives, accomplishments and decisions as opposed to only one poor decision they may have made in an otherwise remarkable life.

But, to each his own.

Cheers to that

I didn't say that an addicted individual is in any way a bad person, I'm just saying that I think they're, ya know, idiots.

Why do we tell our children that it's stupid to start smoking? Because...it is.

You can go and tell all the children of the world that shooting heroine and smoking cigarettes is a bright thing to do, but again I'd have to disagree.

I'm not speaking to someone's character. In fact I think most self-loathing folks (which make up, I'd wager, a "healthy" percentage of the addicted public) are typically thoughtful and generally good-natured people (so long as you don't question them on their addiction).

Is it stupid to smoke cigarettes?

Yes.

Once addicted to smoking cigarettes is it stupid to keep smoking them?

Still, yes.

Is there really a discussion on this?

The thread, I guess, is whether or not smoking makes you bad at, say, algebra. But who the hell cares about algebra? It's stupid staying addicted to something you know is mutilating your body -- the ONE THING you have in this life that will be with you until you're dead, you're literally using it as a garbage dump for toxic waste.

So stop defending and stop being stupid, Stupid.

Geez

Last warning, little boy.

You are playing with grown-ups, and grown-ups tend to say it how it is. You are trying to be intelligent, but failing. Whether or not an individual smokes has no bearing on intelligence.

Mods, please lock or allow me to say my piece. This guy is irritating me to an intolerable level and I am planning on ripping him to shreds on logic alone. I'd prefer to not repeat the last occasion........

Permission to proceed? (If allowed by the mods, I plan on showing you, in public, exactly how misguided you are) Both logically and on an intelligence level (everything you have ever said here will be fair game, yep I am nasty about logic). Pray for a lock. Because this is going to hurt, sonny-boy.

For you, Chamber, gonna need it:

I smoked on and off for ten years. Once, an older friend who had never seen me smoking said to me, "I didn't know you were stupid."

There wasn't a damn thing I could say in response. He's absolutely correct, I thought.

I finally quit before my wife was pregnant with our first child.

I wonder how Jason is doing, BTW.

Doc, there are different types of intelligence. I would leave it at that.

Alright - this isn't going to go anywhere good... and it's pretty obvious no one is going to convince anyone else of their point.
Instead, things are getting more and more personal.

I think everyone has gotten a chance to say their piece.
If you want to continue this discussion I suggest you do it via PM.
