That's what we are talking about; giving the "original" (I know, I know) Star Wars the Blu-Ray HD treatment...

I don't think Spielberg should have put in the walkie-talkies. HOWEVER, when thinking about it, it's understandable -- not for any touchy-feely reasons, but because come on . . . was there any possibility they'd really shoot the kids? The ostentatious closeup of the shotgun being pumped -- that was going to lead up to . . . what? It's just not believable. So, I get it. I'd have left it alone, but I get it.
I don't know. Googling 'child shot by police' returns some 216,000,000 hits. Whether or not you find it appropriate within the world of a story like ET is one thing, but in reality it's all too believable. Considering that the kids in question are in the middle of facilitating the escape of an unknown alien organism carrying gods-know-what kind of potentially Earth-sterilizing pathogens...I don't find 'shoot on sight' orders particularly tough to buy. Even with kids in the line of fire.
E.T. could have shot lasers out of his ass

You guys are approaching this as if it was real life. What's realistic is irrelevant, it's all about what's credible within the context of this particular film, and that's it.I find it more believable that they were just using the guns to intimidate the kids into surrendering E.T.. The shotgun isn't actually being pumped in the close up that was removed, only being raised in a vaguely threatening manner. Under normal circumstances using guns on suburban white kids would be absurd, but it wasn't a normal situation. E.T. could have shot lasers out of his ass for all they knew.

I like that!A couple of Redditers gave him a taste of his own medicine:
In some states, you can go to jail for that.I think they took a few liberties with his chin.
