GH4 ... do i put the fuzzy windscreen OVER the foam on the Rode Video Mic Pro?

Sorry I already know this is a dumb question, but on the Rode Video Mic Pro I got the fuzzy windscreen to cut wind noise. Do I remove the foam and then put on the big wind sock? Or can I just put it on right over the existing foam one that it ships with? Any reason to do one or the other?

Also since you're here.. ;)

What are the best settings to dial this in at for the GH4? -10, 0, +20 and there's a couple power settings.

Lastly, how many hours will the battery I put in last?

Thanks for the help

You can't remove the foam. Just put it on top.

Battery lasts like 50 hours or so, IIRC.

Furry windmuffs are almost always sized to go over the foam windscreen whether the foam one is removable or not.

The foam is not very suitable nor effective outdoors in anything but the very slightest of breezes. I was in on the field testing of prototypes for thewindcutter.com "windjacket" for the ZoomH1 and with the most successful prototype, I tested in close to a 30MPH wind both with a foam windscreen over the mics (an off the shelf version from Wind Tech, I believe) and without. Results were best with the furry WindJacket stretched over the foam. With just the fur over the H1, there was a touch less "deadening" air space between the fur and the mics, and there was a bit of movement of the fur sliding on the body near the mics.

Video of my test is here: https://vimeo.com/17918160

The longer the fur the better "bleeding off" or dissipation of wind energy you get. The best wind protection for mics in the arctic regions used to be wolf fur, but these days none of us wants to see wolves "taken" for use of their fur. The best model the folks at thewindcutter.com make uses a good grade of artificial "fur" that is 2" in length. They call it the "Stormchaser" and that's the model I order from them.
