Do I have to buy a Quadro to run Avid xpress pro?

I am putting up a PC for a friend in TV production study, who doesn't have much money, to run Avid xpress pro (hopefully HD), however, it seemed like I have to spend at least $800 Canadian for a Nvidia Quadro card, which is really making me hesitating.
Can you guy suggest me anything cheaper that can take the duty?

Very many thanks!

I would say stick with what the requirements are. I had major trouble with upgrading to HD probably because of my graphics card. I have a nVidia geforce fx card, and it doesn't run HD. I wanted to upgrade to HD for the export to tape option, but lost myself 50 bucks from purchasing upgrade. I'm still looking for a way to export my work to tape.

Bottom line, you're better off sticking with requirements.

Thanks for reply HKFF

What you have said also gave me some hope. You said you've upgraded to HD, can you tell what you were using before which got along well with your geforce. Because we could sacrifice some if we have to.

Again, thank you!

I've got one Avid Xpress Pro HD running with a GeForce 4 Ti and one running on a Quadro FX500. Both run Xpress Pro HD well. The Quadro gives me more perfomance in real-time DVE stuff, but the GeForce works just fine.

Also the Quadro FX 500 is $200 U.S. I can't imagine it being too much more Canadian, so you might look at that card as an alternative. I realize it's not specifically on the "approved" list for Xpress Pro HD, but it was on the approved list for Xpress Pro 4.6 and it's never given me any trouble.

Hope that help.

I used Avid Xpress Pro 4.6 Academic version. Good luck.

It seems I don't have to get Quadro FX1300 to get it working. Thanks to you both be so helpful, that will save my friend from going bankrupt.

Well, the NVidia QuadroFX 500 is also on the list for Avid Xpress Pro HD. It is the cheapest card that must work with HD.

Does someone have expirience with the Quadro FX 500 and the Avid Marquee tool?

Excuse my getting in here, but the only Quadro FX500 I could find at Newegg is the PNY. Is that a reliable brand?

The next question to JSVG has to do with what are you planning to run on that Avid system: SD, HD or HDV?

Your questions very much tune with mine, on what better to buy for a PC based Avid, in my case with an AMD CPU instead of a Pentium one.

Can other Nvidia based video boards be considered, like an FX5700? Perhaps that might be an option for that system you are assembling too.

That's the brand I'm using. They're a major manufacturer of NVIDIA cards and I've never had a problem.
