Do i buy a HD Upconversion DVD player or a Bluray player?? i own a 720p 42"Samsung TV

so any input would be great! btw, i have a Plasma 42" Samsung HDTV.

just seeing if someone else has a 720p 42" TV and has any experience with either player.

basically 50 bucks or less for an Upconversion DVD player. (how good do these really look?)

250 bucks for a Blu-ray player... if it's going to look great on my 720p Samsung Plasma
...i'm down to get it.

thaaanks!

Well...one FACT is the uprez will never match the quality of a bluray, especially if the bluray player is downrezzing 1080 content to fit your 720p TV...it'll look great. DVD's won't look awful, but Bluray is a whole new beast, especially when it comes to sound.

The real question is whether or not you care about the benefits of Bluray...that should instantly help you decide. Get a PS3...gives you it all in one nice package.

The blu-ray player will only look better if you're playing actual blu-ray discs in it. Are you planning on getting those? If not, save the dough and get a decent upconverting player.

There are BluRay players that can also stream your Netflix (if you have it), surf YouTube, Pandora music, and act as a media extender if you have a media center PC somewhere in your house, and they're upconvert your SD DVDs. So for about $200-$250 more, can enjoy BluRay and more. You may as well go for the BluRay.

yeah, looking like Blu-ray..i have Netflix too.

thanks for all your input fellas! now gotta decide on which player -- i want Wi-Fi b/c i can't drag an ethernet cable across my living room.

anyone have one that you'd recommend ??

I have one I WON'T recommend. It's the Memorex player. I only say I won't recommend it because the start up time is counted in minutes, not seconds. I turn on my player, sit down, wait ... send a few text messages, get something to drink, THEN I can put a disk in.

Get the Blu-ray player. The Blu-ray discs will look better than anything you've seen and a good player will also upconvert standard DVD's.

Best of both worlds.

That way you're set for the here and now.

Get a magnavox Blu-Ray player at walmart for around a $130.00. I got one about a year ago and it's great. Consumer reports rated it as one of the top players a year ago. It's profile 1.0 so it will do PIP.

You can get a machine that does both properly, OPPO BDP-83:

Without a question greatest DVD player ever built for the price.($499)

If you dont wanna spend that kind of dough Oppo DV-980H($169) is good enough too (minus BluRay player). Actually this model is specifically recommended for 720p TVs.

Only downside of the BDP-83 is that it is not a multiregion player due to BluRay restrictions, although it is easily hackable via a downloadable firmware.

I have a 42" Samsung DLP and a Panasonic Blu-Ray player. We bought the LG BluRay first in the same price range that had wireless and Netflix built in it. It died within 5 minutes, so we got the Panasonic because it was well-reviewed, plays most anything and starts up quickly.

As far as quality, I was blown away by the SOUND of the discs more than the picture, but then again, I just picked up Braveheart and it was like i was watching it for the first time, the best medium I had seen it in until then was DVD.

All that being said, BluRay makes me want to buy a better TV.

The Pana 605 is now $170 at Costco, playes BD, AVCHD (from a card too) and regular DVD. It is a Consto's version of the 60. Upscales ok, deinterlaces ok. This is not an HQV or DVDO equipped hi-end machine, but is good enough for not wanting more. No DivX though, and it is region locked both for BD and DVD, not sure whether it plays unlocked 50Hz DVDs.
